If you don't know, let me background you up: The Exiles are heroes (mostly mutants) plucked from various realities by the enigmatic Timebroker and deployed to correct anomalies in the Multiverse. These glitch fixers make their quarters at the Panoptichhron (a.k.a. the annoyingly very pink Pink Palace), an observatory existing outside of the space-time continuum and from which the Multiverse can be monitored.

The Exiles, it's a constantly fluid line-up as death comes a'knockin' more times than the Avon lady, and perhaps it's partly because these characters aren't cemented in the mainstream 616 continuity and so aren't as relevant and consequently more expendable. But, partly, it's also due to the extreme level of danger and the very high stakes involved. Most of their missions involve having to alter timelines for the good of whatever respective alternate reality. The mortality rate is pretty disheartening, and these cats pretty much exemplify the "hard luck heroes," although they got nothin' on Strikeforce: Morituri in terms of body count (anyone remember that team?). Currently, the roster consists of the teleporter Blink, the probability-warper Longshot, the menacing Sabertooth, the shapeshifting Morph, and Heather Hudson (her own reality's Sasquatch).

In the previous collection - Exiles Vol. 12: World Tour, Book 1 (X-Men) - the Exiles returned to 616 Earth, during the House of M event, and ran afoul of Proteus, a body-snatching killer mutant. The Exiles pursue him to the New Universe reality, with Proteus, along the way, possessing and essentially murdering Exiles member (and Blink's significant other) Mimic and then John Tensen (a.k.a. Justice).
