Book Description

0898623448 978-0898623444 September 3, 1993 1
Integrating existential thinking with the clinical practice of hypnosis, this volume provides a useful tool for all mental health professionals. It describes the work of various philosophers, such as Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, and connects their theories to the psychotherapeutic process. Chapters address issues relating to the incorporation of existential thought in the practice of hypnotherapy: the crucial importance of the therapist?patient dialogue; the authors' argument against hypnosis as an "altered state" of consciousness; and the inadequacy of measurement scales that reportedly determine a patient's ability to be hypnotized. An important feature of the book is the authors' linking of particular hypnotherapy techniques for specific therapeutic outcomes. This book will be invaluable to clinicians who want to help clients break old, self?destructive habits and maintain healthy patterns of behavior.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Vivid case studies illustrate clinical techniques and make this most inviting reading." --J. Solis, Ph.D., Acapulco

"King and Citrenbaum may well be the Siskel and Ebert of the traditional pathology centered approach...Critical and controversial! However, King and Citrenbaum may just be right!" --Cardwell C. Nuckols, Ph.D.

"Once again, the team of Citrenbaum and King has made an invaluable contribution to the professional literature in hypnotherapy, adding to their earlier works Irresistible Communication; 20 Modern Clinical Hypnosis for Habit Control. Their knowledge of the subject is immense, bolstered by many years of experience as psychologists who utilize hypnotherapy in their practices. The writing style is crisp, and the book is filled with illustrative case vignettes. They have managed to meld the topics of existentialism and hypnosis into a highly readable and interesting treatise, which should appeal to both students and practitioners of modern psychological hypnosis." --Lewis B. Morgan, Ph.D., Professor of Counseling and Human Relations, Villanova University

"The existential framework of King and Citrenbaum's latest book illuminates their dynamic approach to clinical hypnosis. This cogent elucidation of Milton Erickson's pioneering work, rich with case examples, will be welcomed by their hundreds of satisfied workshop participants. I was particularly impressed with their provocative critique of addictions theory which questions some of the basic 'truths' and points the clinician toward new treatment strategies." --William M. Cohen, M.D., Acting Director, Child Development Unit, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

"As the Ericksonian field matures, it naturally encounters its ancestors. In this book, the world of hypnotherapy meets that of existentialism, emerging with a therapy that challenges long held assumptions while celebrating and deepening the power of personal choice." --Hillel Zeitlin, LCSW-C, Director, Maryland Institute for Ericksonian Hypnosis and Psychotherapy

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, February 26, 2001
This review is from: Existential Hypnotherapy (Hardcover)
This book is so full of common sense wisdom that you may wonder why you haven't heard it all before. Yet the approach is unique, especially on dealing with addictions. Also, the use of client generated metaphors and imbedded suggestions is very well explained and interesting. I probably have enjoyed this book as much as any on hypnosis. Very enlightening!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, February 20, 2001

Bob (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Existential Hypnotherapy (Hardcover)
The chapter on addiction was unique. The approach taken about the addiction fad was different than other books I have read on the subject. While the book covers a wide range of hypnotherapy topics, including a very good chapter on metaphors as client controlled, the chapter on addictions alone would have made the book worthwile. It is a must read, and was a pleasant surprise to me-much more than I expected!

5.0 out of 5 stars sophisticated, philo- and psychologically based viewpoint, July 9, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Existential Hypnotherapy (Hardcover)
A good treatise to help understand the very bases of hypno- therapeutic possibilities to help the patients. More a mature way of unserstanding than an elementary book for learning.
