Editorial Reviews

Shugo Tokumaru is the kind of artist you hear about from that friend of yours, the one who first took you to that out-of-the-way Peruvian restaurant, the one who made you that mix with the great Icelandic reggae band on it. This friend has a knack for sniffing out things that are special and unique. Extraordinary maybe. Extraordinary is a word that describes Shugo well. In fact, if there is any one adjective that can be applied to a young pop genius making miniature symphonies in his bedroom in Tokyo, extraordinary is it.

I saw this CD ranked high on metacritic. I've never heard of him before, even though I study Japanese and try to keep informed on their music scene.

Then I watched his videos on Youtube. The videos along with the music really draw you in.

I'd describe his music as a little bit Sufjan Stevens, a tad of Animal Collective, and part psychedlic era.

The music is what makes it; especially since he's singing in Japanese.
Don't worry about that part, though; even though I understand Japanese I really can't make out what he's saying.

The instrumentation is really wonderful and unique. He weaves seemingly simplistic melodies together into a wonderful cacophony.
I can hear banjos, steel drums, accordian, guitars, drums, piano, and toy piano, to name a few instruments on this CD.

If you're into Alternative and unique music, check this out!

'Exit' is difficult to describe. The best I can come up with is that it's sort of like the musical equivalent of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. It's wacky, disorienting, very foreign, and very fun. The songs veer all over the place. There are simply-structed, catchy pop tunes ('Parachute') and songs that shift time signature and style with wild abandon ('La La Radio'). There is eerie discordance alongside beautiful melody. There are at least two songs ('D.P.O' and 'Future Umbrella' come to mind) that could be the theme song for the world's creepiest kid's show.

It's clear that Shugo is a both talented musician and a meticulous craftsman, and he has enough musical ideas here to fill twice as many songs. Let him show you around his factory.

This was the first album I heard by Shugo. NPR turned me on to him a couple years back. I've recently been geeking out on hifi stereo gear, and this was a must add to the collection since it doesn't appear to have been pressed to vinyl...yet. The mix sounds great, if you're on the fence, get off of it and buy this album!

Alright. I've had this one for a while now. This was a critics purchase. What I mean is that the critics made me buy it. They all just gushed over it so much, I wanted to try it out.

For months, it sat there. Sure, I'd listened to it, but...it was just too much. It was very out there. I consider myself someone who buys a lot of music and listens to a lot of music. And, hey, we can all get into songs that are experimental, but I like stuff that has some superficial appeal, too. You know, the type of music that you listen to because, for some biolgical reason, your ears and brain actually enjoy it?

Then, last night, Shugo hit me like...well, maybe a quarter ton of bricks. Are all the songs great? No. But there are some standout tracks. If you want to try something a bit different, and you can keep an open mind, try it out. But, I would say on my first half-dozen listens to this one, I was unimpressed. But, tonight, I'll be listening to it again to appreciate some of the moments on this albums that I only just now have begun to enjoy.
