Editorial Reviews

Review

. . . marginal musicians caught in the rock 'n' roll dream stumble through a procession of low-rent clubs and poverty scale gigs. -- Bill Sherman, Post Amerikan, Bloomington, August/September2000

. . . sums up punk rock life much like a modern day Shakespeare: to be Kurt Cobain or not to be. -- Bob Fitrakis, Columbus Free Press, Summer 2000

. . . when punk was new and rebellious and drugs rampant were as promiscuous sex. . . there's nothing like NYC for a story. -- Christine, Slug & Lettuce zine, June 2000

Busted four years ago at a Tompkins Square Park squatter riot, Wishnia sued for false arrest and used the settlement money to finance his first punk rock novel. -- Sound Views, December 2, 2000. Author interview with Jonathan Dixon

Fuck those Chicken Soup books—this is rock-n-roll writing for the rebel soul guaranteed to engage the reader. -- Shawna Kenney, Screw Magazine, October 2, 2000

Original False Prophets band member and High Times staffer Steven Wishnia warns his readers not to jump to any conclusions in Exit 25 Utopia, his semi-autobiographical work. But theres at least this much to be deduced from the intensity of Wishnias work: This man has seen the best and the worst that Americas punk-rock scene has had to offer. The trick is getting the madness and the beauty of it all on paper, and Wishnia pulls that off with sixteen sharp and insightful vignettes. If you can picture a Lower East Side cross-pollination between Henry Rollins Get in the Van and Jack Kerouacs On the Road, you have Wishnias Exit 25 Utopia in your hot little hands. Silja J.A. Talvi -- Heckler

Steve Wishnia has a bad attitude, a good memory, a long FBI file, and a discerning eye for the psychodynamics of rocknroll on a minimal budget. Exit 25 Utopia presents a parade of screw-ups, idealists, and egomaniacs that will fascinate anyone interested in the anthropology of underground music. -- Charles M. Young, longtime writer for Rolling Stone, Playboy, Musician

Steve Wishnia's book let me know that rocknroll tragicomedy, which I lived in San Francisco, was the same on the East Coast: as closing time impended the prospect of sex with a stranger was often far more enticing than the two-hour double-fare subway and bus ride to Queens. Well, yes. A favorite sentence about hopeful rockers: The distance between their desire and their capabilities seemed galactic. It's a relief to read the thrilling and cryptic truth, when so many are busy glamorizing their own roles in hindsight. -- Jennifer Blowdryer, author of White Trash Debutante

Steven Wishnia is senior editor of High Times and a first-rate journalist specializing in dope, housing issues, squatters rights and guerrilla radio. His first novel, Exit 25 Utopia, is the finest memoir of a hard time for the counterculturethe 1970s and 80s. Steve recreates the Chevy vans, the Quaaludes and smoke, reggae and punk rock, pre-AIDS gymnastics, and the lingering, gnawing legacy of a more hopeful future nurtured in the 60s that had all but evaporated by the time disco, and then Reagan, ruled. Wishnias powerfully descriptive language and instinct for the comic conjures the lower echelon of the rocknroll band-on-the-run. This is Spinal Tap with pathos.Michael Simmons(SIC (literary zine)) -- (Michael Simmons, SIC literary zine)

With pitch-perfect prose, deadpan humor, searing honesty, and keen intelligence, Steve Wishnia captures the longings and dreams of a generation of young rocknrollers: high on drugs, sex, philosophy, and revolution high on music and high on the aftereffects of too many sleepless and wild nights. -- Janice Eidus, author of The Celibacy Club

5.0 out of 5 stars I AM IMPRESSED, April 15, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Exit 25 Utopia (A Great American Punk Rock Novel) (Paperback)
This book on rock history was the best I ever read. Steven Wishnia describes rock and rebellion in a real, down-to-earth fashion. He tells it like it is and doesn't leave out anything of the life of the 16 bad punks he chronicles. Part of what was so great about te book was that Wishnia has the ability to describe in a way that keeps you interested and begging to know more. Trust me, you won't get bored reading about rock and roll when you're reading "Exit 25 Utopia."

1.0 out of 5 stars But where is the punk?, September 30, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Exit 25 Utopia (A Great American Punk Rock Novel) (Paperback)
Perhaps if this author had spent less time in his room with his bong and more time out amongst the public he would have a better understanding of what punk really is. But then again, the history of punk is full of self-absorbed men who overestimate their importance and haven't the slightest clue about real passion. Wishnia completely misses the point and falls flat. I found myself struggling to keep my eyes open as I waded through this wearisome work.
