possibly the Greatest Band you've never heard of (and this is their best album),
This review is from: ExitheUXA (Audio CD)
so, I was extremely distraught to find that this CD, let alone band, had not yet been reviewed. I shall fix that injustice.
GoGoGo Airheart was a post-punk band from San Diego, California, that was active from 1996 to 2006, and made up of a core of Mike Vermillion, Ashish Vyas, Ben White, and Andy Robillard. First and foremost, I absolutely LOVE Gogogo Airheart. Their experimental/indie/dance rock was completely new as a genre to me when I first divulged into their sound in 2006. I unfortunately never saw this wonderful San Diego band in concert because in early 2006, the band decided to call it quits. Their final show was played at The Casbah on May 22. However, I was blessed, unlike so many people out there, to stumble across this fantastic band. I was introduced to GOGOGO AIRHEART, specifically this album entitled EXITHEUXA, by a friend of mine who was on the cutting edge of music at the time, specifically in the rock genre. I grew up loving the Strokes, Interpol, Q and Not U, Blur, The Faint, Desaparecidos, & Death Cab, all the way to the likes of the Blood Brothers, Wu Tang, & Q-Tip, among countless others- really just anything that had a great sound or beat, and the more strange and unknown the better (though that's not to say bands like the Strokes have a small following by any means). Well, this band took the cake- they were, and still are, virtual unknowns, and the sounds- heavy in lead guitars and wild vocals, created a genre of their own that few bands ever allow for creatively. They had no boundaries, as can be seen in their dub-oriented sounds to their three minute guitar solos and whiny yet powerful vocals filled with strange yet serene lyrics that grabbed the heartstrings AND mindstrings and tugged with a beauty and intelligence all its own. EXITHEUXA is by far my favorite album of theirs. From quick fixes like Sincerely P.S. and My Baby has a Gang Sign, to longer guitar-heavy songs like Here Comes Attack and Last Goodbye, to powerful dub-oriented songs like When the Flesh Hits and Nice Up the Dance Floor, this album ATTACKS and ATTRACTS like no album ever had for me before. Songs 4, 5, and 6 (MiFi, Here Comes Attack, Last Goodbye) work into one another before finally releasing an everlong guitar solo that for me was an ecstasy that few pleasures in life can quite bring us close to. Obviously, I love this band, this album, and most importantly, this sound that unfortunately no one else was able to identify and incorporate to their own extent. I own this album on vinyl, and I highly recommend supporting your local vinyl store and looking for any GOGOGO AIRHEART LP you can get your hands on, but at the very least buy a CD and support GoGoGo and sing their praise to any friend you value.
