Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2011 release, the third album proper from the Texas Alt-Rock trio. From sharing stages with their heroes to experiencing Arizona's controversial laws firsthand, the album was born in an especially intense period for the band. Album opener 'Adjust' is a tale of persecution and a sonic mindfield. Nina Diaz's voice turns from a lament to a growl in a split second while the thundering combination of Phanie Diaz's drums and Jennifer Alva's bass rattle your ribcage. 'Smart' showcases GIAC's own special recipe for a melodic pop song. The stomping rhythm of future GIAC anthem 'Control' lays a foundation for Nina's voice to build empires of heartbreak on.

Girl in a Coma's third original album highlights a band at the peak of their powers while demonstrating their continuing maturity in the studio. Undoubtedly they labored under the pressure to take the next musical step from their previous efforts. The raw and breathtaking "Both Before I'm Gone" and the experimental and exploratory "Trio B.C." have both influenced this album. "Exits and all the Rest"effectively balances the cohesive nature of the former while including the sophistication of the latter. The songs are highly addictive and show a tendency to get stuck in your head, especially "She Had a Plan." This album should be considered a breakthrough in the sense that this band is here to stay and will be producing music for the foreseeable future . . . that's good news for the rest of us.

I love this album. It's so different from their first 2 original albums, but it's still the same band I know and love. There's a level of maturity shown here that can only be achieved by being with your band mates day in and out for years on the road.

I actually saw them in a concert. They were really good so I bought some CDs. The lead singer has a very powerful and awesome voice. The sound is really good as well with different types of inspirations in the beats.

I looked into Girl in a Coma because they were coming to a club in town. After checking out some of their songs on You Tube, I listened to the sample of Exits & All the Rest and liked what I heard. I had high hopes for the cd and was not disappointed. I love Nina Diaz's voice, rich, earthy & sometimes growly. I love the whole cd and listen to it regularly, but I think "Sly" is my favorite. I hear shades of Joy Division in "Smart," which is very catchy, as are "One Eyed Fool, " and "She Had a Plan." They also put on a great show - so glad I looked them up. I'll be buying more of their music. Love them!

Girl in a Coma is a progressive punk Latina trio that respects their rock and roll heritage. To my ears they can be compared to artists like Blondie, Chris Isaak, and the Strokes, without really sounding too much like these artists. Punk is really their attitude of giving songs a hard rock and roll edge. Their lyrics have the typical love-obsessed/love-damaged themes, but the melodies are rich, punkish, and satisfyingly organic or complex. Drum and bass lines are elegant. Overlaid on that is a lead singer with a voice like a more powerful, more soprano Fiona Apple; however, this singer has more of a penchant for non-verbal singing. I wouldn't call it skatting or yodeling, but an accenting and sometimes really heartfelt letting loose of her voice to help make up melodic lines. The lead singer also plays lead guitar convincingly, and it is interesting how she divides vocal and guitar lines. I can well understand why she is considered (in other customer reviews) to be an underrated vocalist and stylist. The CD has a good mix of varied-tempo rock ballads. I'm not sure which songs are standouts, because they are all so strong, so I bought their two earlier releases (but not their covers album) on the quality of this release. While their most recent is still my favorite, the two earlier ones are not too far behind. Hope they get big soon but stick to their artistic guns. Their music could really give popular music a credibility boost.

So glad i got this Cd, Girl in A Coma ROCK !!! My sister posted a live video of them on my Facebook page, liked it, so i bought the CD, and it Rocks, i'm now a Girl in a coma fan ! Listen to it often on my Zune, and i hope they come to Boston soon. On the Blackheart label (Joan Jett, she Rocks too), an indie rock band made up of three young girls from Texas, sisters Nina (vocals/guitar) and Phanie Diaz (drums) and long-time friend, Jenn Alva (bass). Though i like most of the songs, my favorites are "One Eyed Fool", "Knocking At Your Door", "She had a Plan", "So".....Ah hell i like them all, started listening to the CD again as i'm writing this. BUY IT !!!!

Drums over poweer the rest of the music. Would like to here more guitar & more of the vocals than the driving drum. It gets old after one track.
