Product Description

Exo Terra Monsoon
The Exo Terra Monsoon RS400 is a programmable rainfall system suitable for all types of terrariums and greenhouses. It helps maintain optimal humidity by generating precipitation at programmed intervals. The duration and frequency of precipitation can be easily adjusted depending on the type of animal or plant housed. Frequent rainfall helps stimulate breeding behavior, and is a necessity when housing live tropical plants such as Bromeliads, orchids, and mosses.

The system can be programmed to rain multiple times per 24-hour cycle, for time periods ranging from one second to two hours. The large one gallon reservoir ensures continuous operation for several days without the need for refilling and the reservoir can be easily replenished without needing to uninstall the entire system. The Monsoon System is ideal for when you are going on a vacation and want to ensure a proper watering system for your pets.

The Exo Terra Monsoon RS400 comes with two easy-to-install nozzles, but the system can be extended to accommodate up to 6 nozzles, making it ideal for multiple terrariums*. To connect additional nozzles, an extra nozzle and a Y-connector are needed (sold separately). Simply cut the tubing where convenient, preferably as close as possible to the first Y-connector and make sure the nozzle can easily be mounted in its intended location without stretching the tubing. Connect the tubing coming from the unit to the single hole of the Y-connector and the other end of the tubing to the double hole. Finally, connect the tubing from the additional nozzle to the other hole of the Y-connector.
*Every additional nozzle will result in less performance from each nozzle installed.

Product Features

Exo Terra Monsoon
  • Flexible spray nozzles can be pointed in any direction

  • Easy to install tubing; fits through the closeable wire/tube inlets (featured on all Exo Terra Terrariums)

  • Easy to connect and install

  • Sloping top; makes filling water reservoir easier

The presence of clean and fresh water is important for the proper care and maintenance of captive reptiles and amphibians. The Exo Terra Monsoon helps ensure that a quality water source is always easy accessible for the terrarium inhabitants and that the water is kept clean and free of debris.

Maintenance

It is advisable to place the unit in a dark location or otherwise shielded from light to prevent the growth of algae in the reservoir. Should algae form, just wipe the inside of the reservoir with a damp cloth. Do not use detergent or solvents as it might harm your terrarium animals! Make sure to discard any dirty water or water containing debris or particles. Only use de-mineralized/distilled water or debris-free and clean rainwater.
Exo Terra Monsoon

Replace the filter regularly, at least every six months depending on the usage and water quality. If the nozzles are clogged or if they spray irregularly, place the nozzles overnight in a 50/50 water/vinegar solution. Rinse thoroughly with clean water before mounting the nozzles back onto the terrarium. If the problem persists, replace the nozzles. Replacement nozzles (PT2501) and filters (PT2500) are available separately.

The Exo Terra Monsoon RS400 should be set according to the needs of the animals housed and to the size of the terrarium. Be careful not to operate the unit too frequently or too long to avoid overflowing the terrarium. The unit should be set so that water added to the terrarium from the first operating cycle is allowed to evaporate before the next operating cycle begins, or at least make sure that the excess water can be drained out of the terrarium.

Easy to set up and install.

Also after only 1 week, the timer is at fault, causing the system, to spray until the water reservoir is empty.

I had bought and returned the Zoo Med Habba Mist and returned it because it was not a "mister" at all as other reviews suggested. After returning it, I bought the Exo Terra Monsoon RS400. I am VERY impressed with this product with one exception. You will read below on numerous reviews that the timer goes out. After reading and purchasing anyway, I paid close attention to the unit and discovered after a few day, moisture appeared behind the blue power light, thus indicating moisture within the top of the unit that houses the electronics and motor. I took it apart and through trial and error, realized 1. that the internal hose fittings were letting water out and air in the lines. I did not realize it when I first hooked up the unit and powered it on, but there was an intermittent "hissing" noise, as if air was in the lines which caused the sprayers in the terrarium to hiss in between powerful yet gentle bursts of mist. I removed the internal lines, cut 1/8" off the ends of each line to create a snug fit, AND added liquid gasket sealant that you would get at your local auto store. I paid close attention to NOT allow the liquid to get in the lines or cause latent contaminants to get into the supply, thus poisoning my reptile. I also realized that I should NEVER fill the unit via it's convenient, sloped fill inlet on top of the unit. EXO Terra did a terrible job designing this unit's fill hole and did not seal it well. Therefore, when I filled the unit through the top, water was able to enter the electronic portion of the top. This probably caused the electronic programmable timer to stop working per numerous other reviewers' comments. So, I now lit the top off the water reservoir, and fill the unit that way to prevent water from entering the electronics portion of the unit.Read more ›

With emphasis on "Low Budget."

The alternatives are Mistking, Super Rain and Mr. Moisture.

I think all 3 of the alternatives are overkill. They are really meant for large setups like pet stores, zoos or professional breeders. We're talking 7-100 separate vivariums. They also cost twice as much. Sure you can get the bare bones basic MistKing for $100 but then you need it shipped, some extra nozzles here, a seconds timer there, maybe an airtight reservoir and you're up to $200 easy.

The Monsoon RS400 is quick and easy. It looks good too. You could have it on display with whatever it is you're misting. It doesn't have a huge pump like the other systems which means you won't hear it. That also means its cheaper - you can't get the super fine mist because there isn't enough pressure and the nozzles aren't as narrow or sophisticated. Think of it like an alternative to hand spraying. Sometimes I need to leave for days at a time, and it's CRITICAL that my vivariums get sprayed twice a day or the inhabitants will die. With that in mind, for $100 I bought the Monsoon and I never had to hand spray my tanks again. I also don't feel like I spent too much. It's the ONLY system available in this price range for a full automated misting package.

HOWEVER...the timer did go. One day I came back and it had emptied the entire reservoir of water. This happened after I turned the system on then off manually. Something must have tripped the timer to cycle on...every minute...for hours. I arrived back and just heard the thing pumping air. I even bought it locally so I could take it back but I honestly didn't want to deal with it.

I read so many people complain about the timer problem that I bought a digital wall timer for $6 at Wal-Mart.

There are many negative reviews of this product, because people took a delicate system and abused it. I waited a little over a year to write this review so I could comment on how it performs, as well as how it holds up.

The fine mist is spectacular compared to other foggers. I purchased this unit because I needed humidity in the air, but was tired of the amount of moisture other ones produced, over-saturating and flooding the environment. This performs extremely well in that regard, and the integrated timer works wonders to fine tune the amount of moisture, and how regularly it sprays. Having owned other foggers, I can say without a doubt, this mist the produces is far superior to any other product.

The complaints by people tend to be not from it's initial performance, but it's performance over time, and life span in general. This ranges from the integrated timer breaking, to the mist nozzles failing, to the overall product failing as a whole.

The first thing you must understand is that you need to fill this with distilled water. It tells you that right in the instructions. If you use regular tap or spring water, the minerals will clog the nozzles because they are so fine. Many of the people who had nozzle failures were not using distilled. The second thing is that to prevent condensation in the main unit from reaching the electronics, I leave the top cap off, and only fill the unit halfway. This prevents any serious moisture buildup, and lets the water evaporate rather than re-condensing inside the electronics.

This will be a five star unit if you treat it well, but if you don't expect it to fail just like any other product you abused would.
