Editorial Reviews

Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, 11/96
"'The very model of a meticulous yet exciting step-by-step account of a major historical event.... This splendid, carefully researched and assembled documentary is chock-full of fascinating details as it recalls a courageous, complex and dangerous mission with immense consequences."-

Product Description
Narrated by Morley Safer, this documentary examines the history and impact of the Exodus 1947, the legendary steamship that tried to run the British blockade of Palestine. Crewed by former Jewish-American GIs, the Baltimore steamship took on a cargo of Holocaust survivors in France and headed for Palestine in the summer of 1947. After a bloody battle on the high seas with the British, the "illegal" immigrants were sent back to displaced persons camps in the British Zone of Germany. The newsreel and print media seized upon the Exodus 1947 as a symbol of the Jewish struggle for statehood. This aborted voyage galvanized international support for the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Interviews with scholars and eye-witness testimonies are incorporated with newsreel footage, photographs and information from formerly classified documents to examine the tactical evolution of Ben-Gurion's Haganah and the clandestine American role in supplying dollars and manpower for "illegal" immigration to Palestine.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Historical Account of a Momentous Human Event, April 23, 2009
This DVD far exceeded my expectations because it goes far beyond the Leon Uris novel or the movie adaptation by Otto Premminger. This DVD is the real historical event and I am glad I found it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am the Filmmaker, May 10, 2008
By erodg 13 "Elizabeth" (Venice, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I'm one of the filmmakers of Exodus 1947. The reason I chose this subject, specifically focusing on the secret American involvement in "illegal" immigration to Palestine following World War II, is because it seemed to me that many people are unaware of the history of the creation of the State of Israel. While the documentary doesn't specifically focus on the creation of Israel in 1948, it does provide a window into this history, by focusing on one of the events that helped bring statehood into fruition.
