Editorial Reviews

The most enduring attribute of this 1960 Preminger epic is Ernest Gold's famed score and its Theme of Exodus , one of the most unforgettable pieces of movie music ever written. Gold's score, pervaded with Arabic and Israeli melodies as well as Gold's signature touches, won an Oscar; this soundtrack LP, a Grammy winner and a #1 album for 14 weeks, is now available for the first time in years!

Customer Reviews

It has some really great songs on it.

Such emotion, tells the story through the musical notes.

I fell in love with this soundtrack years ago.

I can't believe that I am the first person to review such an excellent soundtrack! What can I say except that the title track, "Theme of Exodus", is probably the most beautiful piece written for a movie and the rest of the album is not far behind. Track 10 "Conspiracy" is another interesting piece with the authentic Israeli and Arabic music. Track 12 "Dawn" is one of the most dark and foreboding film pieces that I have ever heard, it definitely more than captures the mood of the scene.
The soundtrack definitely stands on its own, infact, in some ways I found the music to be understated or at very low volume levels in the movie, which for the time period of the early 60's strikes me as unsusual. I thought that the music would be more prominent, similar to one of its cotempoaries such as "Lawrence of Arabia"
I can definitely hear the inspiration for later soundtracks in this album. I believe that Basil Poledouris must have gotten some inspiration for "Conan the Barbarian" from the title track -if you have any interest to do so, listen to the two and I bet you will hear the similiarity also.
A very informative five page booklet comes with the CD. The booklet features some interesting information about the movie and music. If you are a soundtrack fan or love beautiful music, no matter you age, do yourself a favor and buy this album! If you have the movie "Exodus", buy the soundtrack so you can hear the music in all of its splendor!

Ernest Gold's early version of this (main theme) tune was always a favorite of mine and it practically became Ferrante and Tiecher's theme recording (their piano version being quite good also!). However, here, you get "variations" of the music, compliments of The Sinfonia of London Orchestra, definitely classical, definitely contemporary, definitely melodic. While the background isn't exactly silent as you would find on a DDD CD recording, it's still acceptable and maybe even adds to the ambiance of what this recording is all about and the era in which the tracks were laid. I listen to it quite often. My only fault with the CD is that it's a little shyer in length than most soundtracks -- but it is what it is. Highly reccommended!

Note that Amazon is selling two albums as the soundtrack of "Exodus." One is titled "Exodus"; the other is titled "Exodus (O.S.T -1960)." Amazon is using the same set of reviews for both albums in spite of the fact that the albums have wildly different track times and the second one has two extra tracks. Most important, however, is that "Exodus" has lush sound quality while "Exodus (O.S.T - 1960)" sounds like it was digitized on the cheap. This album gets one star; "Exodus" would get five stars.

much like most of the reviewers, i saw this movie when it first came out and the soundtrack stuck with me ever since. i think all stops should have been pulled to make this one of the finest recordings available. as is, it's fine though. one of my only complaints is how short the soundtrack is. the movie is around 4 hours in length and the soundtrack is about 40 minutes. no matter, the exodus theme packs a powerful punch that has been recorded in a variety of styles from piano to jazz. the movie has been playing of tv a lot lately and i tried to watch it a couple of times. sadly, in my opinion, the movie itself seems dated and not very good, but the soundtrack shines on as an emotional highlight that one will never forget.

I saw the movie as a kid when it came out, and it left me with a virtual imprint of the sound score in my brain. My folks bought the record, and I must have turned the grooves into canyons listening to it so much. I love lush orchestra tracks as it is. Hearing it now without the perpetual popping and scratching brings out many memories, especially that the nation of Israel, Marvin the Martian and I are all the same age. I still can't listen to the score without feeling moved. That's just me. How can I not give this album 5 stars? The main theme has been covered by a multitude of artists, but this original is still my favorite.

James Fitzpatrick of Tadlow Records and the duo William Stromberg & John W. Morgan (Marco Polo / Naxos and Tribute Film Classics ) are the very best producers of re-recordings of reconstructed film scores from classic movies.
Stromberg and Morgan focused on the big names of the Golden Age of Hollywood, such as Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tiomkin , Erich Wolfgang Korngold , Alfred Newman, Franz Waxman...
Instead, Tadlow has embarked in a serie of great projects, that normally include complete reconstruction of scores of famous films such as Lawrence of Arabia, Quo Vadis, Taras Bulba , Conan the Barbarian , etc ... focusing most on Miklos Rozsa, Basil Poledouris, Jerry Goldsmith and Maurice Jarre (the most represented names in the catalog).

This double cd dedicated to the music composed for the film " Exodus" by Ernest Gold (for which the artist received and Academy Award in 1961) is a good example of the meticolous work to recreate a grand symphonic film score.
The recording of the score with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Nic Raine , was preceded by a careful research and study of the original manuscripts and the surviving instrumental parts.
So, what you hear here is the complete music, as originally conceived by the composer, with no cuts imposed by the movie producer and director: some music is heard for the first time. Because of the original soundtrack had a very poor audio quality, this release offers finally the possibility to ear this famous music in great sound.
The Prague Orchestra and the indefatigable conductor Nic Raine offer a very imposing and powerful reading of this score.

To complete this 2cd set, 6 suites from other films scored by Gold, Son Kaplan, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and Elmer Bernstein are included.

The booklet is full of information and analysis of the various pieces .

Not to be missed.
