I can't believe that I am the first person to review such an excellent soundtrack! What can I say except that the title track, "Theme of Exodus", is probably the most beautiful piece written for a movie and the rest of the album is not far behind. Track 10 "Conspiracy" is another interesting piece with the authentic Israeli and Arabic music. Track 12 "Dawn" is one of the most dark and foreboding film pieces that I have ever heard, it definitely more than captures the mood of the scene. The soundtrack definitely stands on its own, infact, in some ways I found the music to be understated or at very low volume levels in the movie, which for the time period of the early 60's strikes me as unsusual. I thought that the music would be more prominent, similar to one of its cotempoaries such as "Lawrence of Arabia" I can definitely hear the inspiration for later soundtracks in this album. I believe that Basil Poledouris must have gotten some inspiration for "Conan the Barbarian" from the title track -if you have any interest to do so, listen to the two and I bet you will hear the similiarity also. A very informative five page booklet comes with the CD. The booklet features some interesting information about the movie and music. If you are a soundtrack fan or love beautiful music, no matter you age, do yourself a favor and buy this album! If you have the movie "Exodus", buy the soundtrack so you can hear the music in all of its splendor!

Ernest Gold's early version of this (main theme) tune was always a favorite of mine and it practically became Ferrante and Tiecher's theme recording (their piano version being quite good also!). However, here, you get "variations" of the music, compliments of The Sinfonia of London Orchestra, definitely classical, definitely contemporary, definitely melodic. While the background isn't exactly silent as you would find on a DDD CD recording, it's still acceptable and maybe even adds to the ambiance of what this recording is all about and the era in which the tracks were laid. I listen to it quite often. My only fault with the CD is that it's a little shyer in length than most soundtracks -- but it is what it is. Highly reccommended!

I saw the movie as a kid when it came out, and it left me with a virtual imprint of the sound score in my brain. My folks bought the record, and I must have turned the grooves into canyons listening to it so much. I love lush orchestra tracks as it is. Hearing it now without the perpetual popping and scratching brings out many memories, especially that the nation of Israel, Marvin the Martian and I are all the same age. I still can't listen to the score without feeling moved. That's just me. How can I not give this album 5 stars? The main theme has been covered by a multitude of artists, but this original is still my favorite.

The most hauntingly beautiful Theme Music EVER,

The title tells it all for me. Once heard you will never forget it. Did not care too much for the movie itself - horribly miscast (with the exception of Paul Newman) - but the entire production was worth it for the music alone.
Understand perfectly how Gold won the Oscar that year.

Splendid score, but Remastered?,

Having read five good reviews with no caveats on this release, I feel compelled to write this to put forth an observation not raised.
Knowing the original score from the times of LP, I bought this, lured by the word "remastered", but I was dissapointed. Whether it means that the status of the original tapes has inevitably deteriorated with time, and thus, it was impossible to do so, I did not find the sound (Living Stereo!) as good as so many RCA recordings from those really spectacular days of early stereo. In fact, in some tracks it's downright annoying. As much as the short duration can be an issue, it is not when production quality is optimal. There is another oddity: "Originaly Released as RCA LSO-1058, Pop Album #1, Chart Debut 1/1/1961". That's great! But what does it mean "Originally recorded prior to 1972"? Or is it 1962? I don't get it. Generally, this is not a shabby production for the price, it has good liner notes; but the word 'Remastered', plus the details mentiones, prove suspicious. Given the length of the movie, I would hope there is lots of score left behind. So, if the original tapes are the culprit, I can only dream of a re-recording of this score as many enterprising labels (Varese, Naxos, etc.) have done with other composers.

Ernest Gold's musical creation for Otto Preminger's "Exodus" in 1960 has to be one of the greatest compositions in film music and ranks among the best. This CD is original soundtrack and whenever played it still conjures vibrant images of Leon Uris' epic story of the struggle of the early Israelis seeking a home and peace in the Middle East. Whenever I am involved in creative writing I use Gold's "Exodus" music. It is one of those compositions that inspires and triggers deep feelings. For me, it is also very personal. I was a young reporter/photographer in Nicosia when Preminger was filming the Cyprus segment there, as I mention in my autobiography "Kings, Killers and Kinks in the Cosmos." It was also playing when I wrote the original text for my historical novel "Pentadaktylos." Wherever you are in the Cosmos Ernest, my thanks.PentadaktylosKINGS, KILLERS AND KINKS IN THE COSMOS

In 1960 some films featured music of great quality. One of them was "The
Alamo", soundtrack by Dimitri Tiomkin. The Academy of Motion Picture choosed "Exodus" for Best Original Score, and I agree. For the "Exodus Theme" is one of the most beautiful melody of all time. It received lyrics by singer Pat Boone and became a great success world around. Another track that deserves attention is "Karen" a tender theme for the character played by Jill Haworth. Later she became, if I am right, the principal actress in Cabaret (stage version, before the film with Liza Minelli). |
