Editorial Reviews

While hardcore punk may be the sound that rules the day in The Contortionist hometown of Indianapolis, it is the bands signature brand of forward thinking heavy metal that has made them stick out as hometown favorites. The band worked hard to earn a loyal fol1owing beyond Indianapolis though consistent regional shows, coastal Major US tour for OCT 1 NOv touring, and 2 self released EPs.

Produced by Unearth's own Ken Susi "The Contortionist is not your typicall run of the mill band. Lots of bands in this day in age are copy cats or just plain old rip offs of other bands that are currently out now. This is truly an a original band, from the overall look, sound and smcture of the sonos. I really feel this band has a bright future ahead of them!' - Ken Susi

Customer Reviews

I first heard the band about a week ago and I've listened to this album every day since.

I strongly recommend this album if you're a fan of progressive metal, death metal, atmospheric metal, or just great music in general.
Jeremy Brackeen
Interesting progressions, key changes, and modal sounds show off the talent of these musicians.

I heard tidbits of songs off this cd ad wasnt impressesd. As a fan of pure tech it wasnt exactly my style. I was listening to the metal channel via direct tv and heard a full length song and was intrueged. 5.99$ for a mp3 download what the heck? After the first listen through, I was shocked, and was in goosbumps. As others have said, possible album of the year! Its not overly technical, not really fast, but exudes maturity in composition rarely achieved. The atmospheric layering in combination with the progressive aspect of the cd left me stunned. It's moody, groovey, and beautiflly brilliant. Every time I listen to the cd, it gets deeper, welcome to the bottom of the ocean, dont drownd.

This album is mind blowing all around. It spans the gamut from heavy to super melodic and everything in between. I was lucky to catch the last half of their live set at NEMF April 2011 and they were absolutely incredible. The singer plays keyboard and sings the melodies as well as screams. From watching him you can tell he is on another level than your average metal singer.

Knowing that he plays keys on the album let me hear this in a new light. The song themes and lyrical content also make this band unique. People compare them to BTBAM who played later on that night but The Contortionist's performance blew theirs away in my opinion. Check this album out as well as their EP Apparitions which I've seen many hardcore Contortionist fans proclaim as their best album.

I'm not even sure how you'd classify this band. Sci-tech-metal?

I just stumbled onto this band last night, holy hell!!! These guys are ridiculous!! The sounds are so eclectic, but mesh well together. Parts of it would fit right in with the Obzen, Periphery, Colors, Animals as Leaders, Circle of Contempt album and more, but you get my point. I'm not saying it's a rip-off of these. This disc stands on it's own for what it is. And that is a well thought out & flawlessly executed prog, djent, grind, tech, deathcore, whatever the hell u call it...it friggin kills!!! GO GET IT!!!

Exoplanet is simply incredible! This is a truly groundbreaking album. Exoplanet seamlessly blends deathcore and progressive into a heavy but very artistic musical masterpiece. This is one of my all-time top albums. Even the heaviest parts are musically complex, with time signature and tempo changes that make your head spin. All of the tracks are epic (quite literally), and there is a lot of instrumental material here, due to the fact that the vocalist also plays keys.

Exoplanet starts off on a super brual high note with "Primal Directive," a dissonant and odd-timed song full of chugs and growls. It has some brief cleans, but for the most part is just a face ripper.

Flourish starts and ends super heavy with an incredible progressive section in the middle. At 6 1/2 minutes long, this is a prog-death ballad.

Expire is a fast and heavy one, with tons of crazy stuff going on. This song has some sick breakdowns with some ambient spacey sounds provided by the vocalist on the keys, making it very memorable.

Contact is very Dream Theater-ish at first, until it gets to the diminished chugs that is. Lyricaly this song adds to the "space metal" feel that people like to label this style of music.

Advent is a solid song, but I often find myself skipping it to get to the following track, Vessel. Vessel is very musical, portraying some prestigious ideas musically and rhythmically.

Oscillator starts out just as brutal as it gets. Diminished 5ths, minor seconds, triplet chugs make for a super powerful start to the song. This utter brutality only lasts a minute and a half though. After that it jumps into a progressive section that lasts for the rest of the 5-minute long song. A favorite track for sure.

Simply amazing band. Progressive metal at its finest. Sounds even better on vinyl. A must have for a true metalhead.

From reading the other reviews it's clear the term "Djent" is officially overused.
This album is not "djent" in any way, shape, or form.

From track one it's clear that this experimental progressive metal band knows how to write good songs not just technical wankery.
I highly recommend this album if you're a fan of bands like the Faceless.

When I first heard Exoplanet back in early 2011, I was aware of The Contortionist but had never really paid attention to their demo EP "Apparition", which includes several tracks from Exoplanet, but with far less production value, different song titles, and a completely different vocalist, and therefore, a totally different feel. To me it wasn't attention-grabbing.

And then I listened to Exoplanet. My perspective on metal, and songwriting overall changed instantly. From crushing breaks to ambient soundscapes to fascinating lyrics and compelling imagery, I couldn't believe the experience I was having listening to tracks like "Flourish," "Oscillator," "Vessel", and the "Exoplanet I, II, & III" finale. It is a rare occasion that I get chills from listening to music, but the emotion in the song writing is a work of art, and it's un-ignorable.

I urge anyone who has an interest in modern metal to listen to the entirety of this record, or at least the songs listed above. There is something for every metal fan in this album, and the versatility this band has when tying these parts together is what makes them so great. And even better: they are flawless live.
