5.0 out of 5 stars A definite grower
I bought this CD right when it came out, liking Source Direct's earlier stuff. I was originally a bit disappointed, if only because it repeated two tracks from their earlier releases, and because it didn't seem all that special. But after repeated listening, the tracks really grow on you, with their great rhythm parts, always weaving around the eery bass-line melodies,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark, fast and good, but just.
If you aren't into jungle/drum-n-bass already, don't get this. There might be a couple of tracks that really move you, but you might feel cheated by the whole CD. A couple of the tracks are on earlier releases, and at a measly 9 songs already, I thought that was cheating a bit on the artists' part. If you're going to re-release stuff anyway, give me more to listen...

I bought this CD right when it came out, liking Source Direct's earlier stuff. I was originally a bit disappointed, if only because it repeated two tracks from their earlier releases, and because it didn't seem all that special. But after repeated listening, the tracks really grow on you, with their great rhythm parts, always weaving around the eery bass-line melodies, and the "special effects" puncutuating everything. That may sound awfully eclectic, and Source Direct is certainly not for those who have never listened to any jungle before. Still, it's one of the albums that can bear close listening and improve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Controlled Developments!, April 20, 2000
This review is from: Exorcise the Demons (Audio CD)
I read a review by another listed and I must say, "you are totally false!" I dont remember who it was exactly, but they said that Source Direct was far from a "Dark Alternative" music span. Well, I can say that I agree with the fact that "Exorcise the Demons" isnt as "dark" as "Controlled Developments", but it all depends on the listener. What is dark to one person may not be dark to the other! Let people decide on the album themselves and stop trying to tell people what is dark and what isnt! Aside from the fact that they put 2 tracks on this album off of their last album, the album is worth the buy! One track that does not tickle my fancy: "Dubstar"

Photek protegees Phil Aslett and Jim Baker had been prowling the darker-than-dark fringes of drum n' bass for years before letting loose 1998's ferocious EXORCISE THE DEMONS. Like their meticulous mentor, Source Direct's break-charmers acquit themselves admirably. Their first album is a definitive slab of darkcore intensity.Source Direct is fairly single-minded in the pursuit of thick, sinister atmosphere, yakuza-style bass, and melodic dark-matter. The relentlessly slicing and stabbing stainless-steel breakbeats would be mentally debilitating if not for the varied--and somewhat amusing--textures deftly woven into such tension-breakers as "Love & Hate" and "Dubstar." Source Direct's production is sterling throughout. Through sheer force of talent and vision, EXORCISE THE DEMONS craftily outsmarts the album-jinx that continues to bedevil even the duo's most club-savvy peers.

If you're going to re-release stuff anyway, give me more to listen to; more bang for my buck than 9 cuts. Despite all that, I do enjoy the record, and I've been playing it for awhile. It's dark...some of it sounds like outtakes from an "Alien" soundtrack (which is funny, since one of these tracks appeared briefly in the movie "Blade", but not on the soundtrack), and some of it is a little more playful than I figured they'd be, but all in all an okay record. Just don't buy it before some other things you might be looking at (stuff by Goldie, especially).

Source Direct gives you straight forward HARD breaks for your ears. Sounds remind me of Photek and J-Majik.

5.0 out of 5 stars Maximum rinse out, April 17, 1999

Source Direct prove that there is life left in the "Amen" break after all. By not relying solely on techstep loops, Source Direct inject a menacing and unsettling effect on both dancefloors and in headphones as well. I haven't even mentioned the numbing low end yet, but suffice it to say that you will definitely feel the BASS. I read somewhere that the two members of Source Direct tool around London in matching black BMWs. What that has to do with their music, I don't know, but pick up "Exorcise The Demons" anyway.

Exorcise the Demons is an awesome CD. I recently started exploring this genre of music, and I am quite impressed with the tracks on this CD. I had originally bought it for the first track (Call and Response) because it was on the movie "Blade". But I had also sampled a few of the other tracks on the CD, and I liked what I had heard. I bought the CD, and I was indeed extremely pleased with it. If you purchase this CD though, make sure you have a good system to play it with, because if it can't handle the bass, you're out of luck! Very pleasing to the ears and even relaxing at times as well

3.0 out of 5 stars Just kind of annoying, September 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Exorcise the Demons (Audio CD)
I had read in a few places about how "dark" and "apocalyptic" this album was, so I was looking forward to it. I keep trying to give it another chance, but I've had it a while and it's just OK. At least half of the songs have some kind of irritating high-pitched or extremely cheesy sound that destroys any attempt to listen to it. The worst offender is a track with bleeping Atari sounds. It's about as "dark" as Super Mario Brothers. Half of "Love & Hate" (I"m assuming it's the "Love" part) sounds like you're floating along on pink fluffy clouds. There's another song with some kind of crappy piano tinkling. Etc. It's not complete garbage -- there's a track with martial arts-type sound effects that I like -- but doesn't live up to the "dark" hype at all, for me.
