Product Description

The MATCHCAP can carry all sizes of matches from standard kitchen strike-on-the-box to NATO matches and even the extended length stormproof matches. With the dual-striker design you can use safety matches or strike-anywhere matches. An O-ring keeps both the matches and the red phosphorus (strike-on-the-box) striker dry.

Customer Reviews

Only 4 stars instead of 5 because it was pretty expensive for a match case.

The waterproof Matchcap is quite spectacular. Its a bit pricey compared to plastic alternatives, but I wanted to be sure it would be able to fit the extra long stormproof matches (2 3/4 inches long). When it comes to survival gear its important to have redundancy for important items like fire starting. My first option would be my bic lighter or my Zippo Black Ice Pocket Lighter, after that I have other (less expensive) plastic match carriers that will carry my strike anywhere matches. But when it comes to the backup for my backup I need it to be ironclad, and the waterproof Matchcap gets the job done.

Pros

Extremely light weight
Waterproof
Excellent build quality
Durable square threads
Good lanyard attachment
Extra striker surfaces and o-rings included

Cons

Expensive
Limited capacity (I was able to fit 14 Uco Stormproof Matches)

Overall I was very satisfied with my purchase and will be buying another one for my wife's gear.

The Exotac Matchcap Survival Matchcase plus Striker is a very rugged, durable and waterproof match holder. It comes with three strikers: phosphorus, rough texture and strike anywhere striker. I always recommend carrying a striker from the brand of matches that you carry as not all matches will work with all types of strikers. You would not want to find this fact out when it is too late. I carry REI Storm Proof matches and the Exotac will hold 10 matches and one spare striker.

Basics:

Length - 80mm
Weight - 26g
External Diameter - 23mm
Internal Diameter - 15mm taper to 20mm
Holds matches up to 72mm in length
Capacity - 10 REI Storm Proof matches OR 16 NATO matches OR 20 kitchen matches
Waterproof to depths of >5 meters
Construction - lightweight aircraft grade 6061 aluminum
Lanyard capability - the Exotac does not come with a lanyard but there is a lanyard attachment location at the top of the cap.

The Exotac Matchcap is a very expensive piece of gear but if I am cold and wet and pull a match out of this container that starts a lifesaving fire then I am very glad to pay the price. Yes, you can get a plastic waterproof match container for about a buck but it can break and won't hold the REI Storm Proof match which is a longer match compared to other brands.

Overall, I recommend this product and keep it in my gear.

Actually, I'm thinking about two and a half stars... The main purpose of a match safe is to keep your matches dry. This one failed as shipped. It arrived with a bright orange o-ring seal installed. I tested it with a few matches by immersing it in the kitchen sink. After about thirty minutes enough water had entered the tube to make the matches unusable. It was packaged with a a couple of spare black o-rings, and a couple of spare strikers. I removed the original orange o-ring and replaced it with one of the black ones and tested it again. This time it did keep the water out. I was disappointed with this since I expected good performance for the price I paid. It is made from sturdy aluminum, but very light weight. In fact it was light enough to float, although I only put a few matches in it. I don't know if it would float when full. It has a loop on the lid for the included lanyard which is a nice feature. The friction striker on the bottom is a nice feature for strike-anywhere matches, but the tiny phosphorus strip inside the lid, intended for safety (strike-on-box) matches, is not glued down well and was mostly destroyed when water got in during my first test.

This is great design concept, and should have been exactly what I was looking for, but the great design was somewhat poorly executed; or at least suffered from quality control problems. I hope Exotac will address these problems and make corrections. If they do, this has the potential to be a much better product.

Again, overall, it did work, but only after I replaced the original o-ring.

While I own the plastic, bright orange match safes...I wanted something a bit nicer looking for my bug out bag in my car. Now, this is a well thought out safe. On the bottom is the sandpaper striker for "strike anywhere" matches. The "knurling" on the safe itself, is also a strike point as well as grip. And it has the striker for UCO matches on the interior (facing away) from the match compartment.

Generally, it's the same sort of thing I would do with my cheaper plastic match safes...cut out a circular piece of sandpaper and glue it to the bottom and put in a "UCO striker" inside the match safe, facing away from the match heads (never glue a striker to the inside lid and put your "strike anywheres" inside it, as they might light!). And while the bright orange is easy to spot in the field (if you leave it amongs the leaves on the forest floor), this metal match safe is better looking, really functional...and not an eyesore. With the lanyard eyelet, it makes it easy to carry and part of my fire kit.

Kind of over priced, but I will say very well made and rather unique and comes with a lanyard. They make a larger version but again kind of pricey.O-ringed sealed, strikers built-in are nice features.Doesn't hold a full box of weatherproof matches, half maybe a little more. All that said I would highly recommend and I would buy again and probably the larger version also.
