This is a great comprehensive book about the non-native hoofed mammals of the United States. The pictures are beautiful and the researched information complete.

Wot, no Unicorn,
By Twal (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Exotic Animal Field Guide: Nonnative Hoofed Mammals in the United States (Paperback)
My interest in exotic ungulates is that of a well-informed amateur, yet despite my lack of formal mammalian qualifications, I quickly found several holes in this otherwise excellent book.
Where, for example, is the West Indian Wooflechuff? The Pilbeam Pistlewit, Golden Snatchgobbler and Giant Snarp are also notable by their absence. To be fair to the author, these breeds rarely stray beyond their homelands - the run-down trailer parks of Southern California - and yet this simple reasoning cannot justify the omission of the noble Unicorn. I am reliably informed by my American friends that these beasts traverse the continent in mighty herds so vast they take several days to pass any fixed point. This makes their absence a mystery, especially when a whole chapter is given over to the Three-Toed Garglebutt which any exotic enthusiast will tell you is not a true ungulate! |
