Sad. Excellent. Hopeful., December 23, 2008
This review is from: Exotic Retreats: Eco Resort Design From Barefoot Sophistication to Luxury Pad (Hardcover)
Sad. Excellent. Hopeful. How did she do it? These feelings and this question were what I got when I reached the end of the book. I was SAD that Julia Faiers only selected 40 retreats, lodges and hotels to profile. By the time I got to the end of the book I was stimulated to GO, while still wishing I had more profiles to view as an armchair traveler. EXCELLENT are both the photographs of the properties and her writing. Her words champion the concepts of "sustainable tourism," "ecotourism" & "responsible travel." HOPEFUL: I am, that Julia Faiers will research and write more, more, more. However, I was a bit disappointed that she did not reveal more about her method of selected and if she visited the properties. At the beginning she gives a scant paragraph about how she made her selections, but I desired to know how and why she chose this property over the hundreds that are out there and if she went to the retreat, what did she experience? That said, if you want to get off the beaten path and you desire to find a remote Shangri-la in this shrinking world, get this book. Highly Recommended 4.5 Stars

Gorgeous Hotels!, November 29, 2005

Well, most of us will never be able to afford to stay in most of these hotels, but they are absolutely beautiful, and the information on them and why they are eco-friendly. The photos are incredible!
