Biography

Originating in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1969 from the ashes of the semi-professional band The Shadettes, Nazareth -- Dan McCafferty (vocals), Manny Charlton (guitar), Pete Agnew (bass) and Darrell Sweet (drums) - made it big after relocating to London and landing a recording contract with Pegasus records. They released their self titled debut album in 1971 and a second album Exercises 1972. It… Read more in Amazon's Nazareth Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mercilessly Good Album, June 26, 2001
By
Jerry G. (shaker hts, oh United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Expect No Mercy (Audio CD)
Expect No Mercy is classic Nazareth. Hard and heavy in places, mellow and melodic in others, the album is a grab bag of different songs, all united by the eleements that make Nazareth one of the greatest bands in rock history: Unique and visionary guitar work, meaningful lyrics, and emotional and physical power, among other things. The title track is one of the best hard rock songs I've ever heard and probably should be listened to last as a sort of finale. The ballads on this one aren't as sappy as some of the others they've recorded. A few of them show up on all their albums.

Nobody has ever accused Nazareth of inventing any new styles or being the first to do anything. This fact won't have any impact on your enjoyment of the music. But at the same time their influence has been widespread because they epitomize what is best about rock. They make inspiring, substantial music that has stood the test of time. If you want proof, Expect No Mercy will give you a piece of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album you can't do without, February 4, 2003
This review is from: Expect No Mercy (Audio CD)
"Expect no mercy" is truly one of the best rock albums of all time. A must have for any fan of rock music!!

Usually "Hair of the dog" is considered Nazareth's best album, but "Expect no mercy" is in fact a better one. This album includes at least five of Nazareth's best songs ever. What about the furious and fast masterpiece "Expect no mercy", and the catchy "Gone dead train" with its rhythm & blues influence; "Shot me down" - so melodic you can't get it out of your head? Then you got "Gimme what's mine" which is a raw number with an excellent groove you never get to hear these days, and the very melodic "Place in your heart" - a true hit!

The rest of the album is also good and there are indeed no fillers at all on this one. If you get the remastered version you're in for a real treat - the bonus track "Greens"! It's a mystery that song wasn't included on the original album!

"Expect no mercy" from 1977 shows Nazareth at their very best. The following years the band lost direction and released a bunch of mediocre albums, often with a more radio friendly sound. But things got better and in 1998 Nazareth released their best album in 20 years - Boogaloo.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Last Great Nazareth Album!, May 26, 2001
By
Peter Stirling (Aurora, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Expect No Mercy (Audio CD)
After the disapointing funk of "Play'n'The Game" Nazareth roared back into action with this slab of blues-metal. This is a must own for any fan because the greatest hits do not cover all of the great tunes found on this offering. 7 of the 9 tunes are first rate and the extra tracks are good as well. The band had a clear vision and Dan's vocals were still in top shape.

I still remember the record stores plastering the windows with giant posters of the classic Frank Frazetta Cover art. This was the last stand of a great band.
