superb Baby Bonds book,
This review is from: Expecting His Brother's Baby (Silhouette Special Edition) (Mass Market Paperback)
Recently widowed Kylie Warner has no time to mourn as she struggles with debts that threaten the Saddle Ridge family ranch and with a pregnancy. However, she is shocked when she comes across undisputed proof that her late husband Alex cheated on her. Whether it was grief, hormones or despair, following a fight with the other woman Trish Hammond she reacts poorly and ends up hospitalized after an accident.
Saddle Ridge foreman Dix worries about Kylie so he informs her brother-in-law geological consultant Brock, who leaves Texas immediately for Wild Horse Junction, Wyoming to insure she is okay. Brock is between consulting jobs so hangs around the ranch to help Kylie. She finds his presence unnerving as she was sweet on him years ago, but nothing came of it. Brock is half way in love with his hostess, but both he and she know that she is EXPECTING HIS BROTHER'S BABY so neither is ready to take that first step towards the other. This is another superb Baby Bonds book (see CUSTODY FOR TWO and THE BABY TRAIL) starring once again very likable protagonists. The story line focuses on Kylie who internally scuffles with her relationships, past, present and future. Brock is a solid person willing to sacrifice his feelings for her to insure his brother's offspring and widow have what is best for them. Karen Rose Smith provides an entertaining contemporary family drama. Harriet Klausner

I'm not quite sure what possessed me to buy this book to begin with. The story line itself would be enough to put off most people I know. By the beginning of the 3rd chapter, I was thumbing through the rest of the book just to see if anything ever develops between the two main characters! It was pittiful. The story just does not move forward. It's the same-- page after page after page after page. Yes.. writers are supposed to include that all important GMC.. but there HAS to be something other than the heroine's internal conflict to make a story. This one falls short by a mile. There is very little dialogue. There are scenes that do nothing to move the story forward and, in fact, left me wondering why those scenes were even included. Maybe filler for a page count? That's the only thing that made any sense to me. Any emotion between the two main characters is tell, tell, tell- or it's all in the heroine's head. On accasion, we get to know what he is thinking. Gee. More tell, tell, tell. Everything the heroine thinks about doing, the hero is there to tell her she can't. Over and over and over. Enough! We get it! And yes, finally, there is a brief love scene toward the end. Between the hero and the heroiine who is 8-months pregnant. Give me a break. In fairness, the scene where her baby is born and the hero comes through the blizzard just in time to help her is well written and touching, if a bit contrived. My suggestion: if you want to read a good romance... save your money and keep looking. |
