Spotty and intrusive bits of third person narration pop up in random places, disrupting the flow of the story, not adding much to the story that couldn't have been covered in the rest of the book. These interludes also have a haughty tone that distract from the reading experience.

Written accents are automatic turn-offs for me. Reading what is more or less a "cute" speech impediment as seen in five year old children has a detrimental effect on the flow of the story. If the author were to describe this unique feature in his aliens' speech patterns, that's one thing. Putting every added "z" and "w" sound in only serves to irritate the reader.

I only got about a third of the way into this book because of the above two mentioned turn-offs. The story, what I read of it, was fairly unremarkable.

This is a great book about first contact.

I recently came across this author and am disappointed I can't find more of his books.

This book shows both sides of first contact. It shows the human side of awe, yet something we knew would eventually happen.

It also shows the Phuili's beliefs. They believed for millions of years that there is no other intelligent race besides themselves. For there to be intelligent humans goes against everything they ever believed. At first they think of humans as "intelligent animals," but eventually they have to accept that humans are more then that.

As the two races become more and more important to eachother they meet a nasty race of aliens called the "Silvers" who want nothing more then to wipe out every other race in the universe but their own.
