5.0 out of 5 stars Great Base Layer
I live in Denver and ski/ride regularly each winter -- often in extreme temps. These base layer garments (top and bottom) are the warmest I've ever used. For example, I rode last week in negative 10 to negative 20 degree (F) conditions comfortably. Two words of warning: 1. Don't put them on until you are ready to go outside immediately, or you will burn up. 2...

I bought it for winter motorcycle riding. You might want to but one size larger than what you normally. Works though..keeps you nice and warm.

5.0 out of 5 stars super warm, December 24, 2007
By
easily the warmest base I've had so far. In response to the other reviewer... yes, they are thicker than, say, a duofold poly/wool base layer... these are about the thickness of a lightweight sweatshirt, but they insulate SO MUCH better. I usually wear this as part of a 3-layer system... first layer is a silk-weight Duofold "Varitherm", this Red Rock is the second layer, then the 3rd layer is usually a 1/4 zip fleece. With my jacket on top of that, I've handled air temps as low as -10 and wind chills in the -30 range. regarding the bulkiness... it should fit properly... snug, but not tight (similar to the product photo)... if you're the type who is actually a size "medium", yet wears "large" because you like the baggier fit, then be prepared for a little bulk... but if you get your true size, then you should have plenty of room to wear your favorite XL hoodie over this and be super warm. I plan to buy a few more of these soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent base layer for cold weather motorcycling, December 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My test was a 30 minute motorcycle ride at 35 degrees at speeds up to 60mph with these thermals as a base layer under just street clothes and a leather jacket... the product exceeded my expectations. The polypropylene material partially blocks the wind while retaining the majority of your body heat. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the material is substantially bulkier than it appears in the photos. If your outer clothing is loose then it's no problem but don't be tempted to buy a size larger than normal for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing product, but..., November 26, 2007
...they are way too bulky. They look and feel more like a sweater than thermals. Perfect to wear under ski jacket, but for casual wear in cold weather, people will think you put on 10 pounds overnight and it will for sure keep you warm. Maybe I should have gotten the smaller size.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for extending your motorcycle riding season, December 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It was 25F in Chicago this morning and I rode 30 miles to work, mostly at highway speeds and the wind chill that goes with them (about -19F) and I barely needed to turn on my heated jacket. Not a bad problem to have this time of year!

As far as size goes, I might recommend ordering a size down if you're very fit. I'm 6'1", 220lbs and the XL fits perfectly. It is more like a sweatshirt than underwear, but that can also be a benefit because when you take off your jacket, it's not as obvious that you're wearing underwear. I can understand how people with less, um, natural padding than I would interpret that as bulky, but I do not. :)

The red strip you see in the picture is actually made from a thinner material than the rest of the shirt which some have called a design flaw. At the risk of sounding like a rather prominent software company, I'd be more inclined to call this a feature rather than a bug simply because it adds breathability and, dare I say, a dash of style. Does it result in a heat loss? I'm sure it does but I haven't noticed, and when I compare the amount of red stitching to the amount of black, I don't think I ever will.

I would also recommend washing it before wearing it.

This review is from: 100% Polypropylene Expedition Weight Long Underwear Crew (Apparel)
OK, I haven't had this long enough to really test it. But this is definitely WARM, is likely to be very durable, looks good as an outer wear shirt and comes with some nice touches such as a thumb loop to keep the sleeve in place when donning an over shirt, soft fleecy lining, and a tag that is fully sewn in for added comfort. Works for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars design flaw, March 17, 2008

We lived in Northern Alaska for 25 years and my husband worked for the Alaska Air Guard, so he spent a lot of time out in the worst weather. He says those strips of thin fabric down the inside of the arms and sides would be a serious heat loss zone. So, he doesn't really want them. I don't think this feature was mentioned in the product information. I thought it was just a different color of polypropylene from the picture of the longjohn top.

1 - Defective design: the thermal loss through side ribbing.
2 - Incompetent cut: size pattern modeled on a bigger-is-better concept, but without any attention to standard human proportions.
3 - Poor manufacture: stitching wanders along the line, skips and remains loose across the ribbing, the fabric catches lint pills when washed, and there are stray threads and thread ends across the garment.
4 - Could-care-less shipping: speaks for itself.
5 - Not worth the effort and postage returning and so put in the sweatshirt for chain saw work pile.
