From the Author

The Story Behind Expendable

I believe all authors insert something of their own life experiences into their novels.  In the case of romance, our heroes and heroines are sharing their most hidden wounds and most intimate thoughts with the reader.  For me, my stories are a conglomeration of many incidents over time, frequently combined with current events.  I call it "mashup" story development.

The original idea for EXPENDABLE actually came from an incident early in my own life.  Because of cervical cancer in my early 20's I was never able to have children.  Several decades ago someone very close to me offered for me to take her unborn child. She was not married, poor, and could not support a baby. Unknown to her, I was getting divorced and I didn't feel emotionally or financially able to take the baby. Fortunately, she decided to keep the baby and I have had the privilege of watching him grow up and become a wonderful young man.

When I remarried, I had the great fortune to inherit two amazing step-sons.  When I began writing this book, the oldest was returning to Iraq for his second tour.  After hearing only a few stories about his first tour, I was scared to death he would come home with PTSD.  That is why the hero of my story has PTSD.  Again, fortunately, our son came home without injury (physical or mental) and is now in law school.

While our son was in Iraq, there was a lot of news about stem cell research and whether it was ethical to use cells from aborted fetuses to do the research. That was the final piece that tied together my story.  Now I had a heroine with an impossible choice from her pregnant sister, a former-Marine hero with PTSD, a murder, a child with no identity, and biogenetic experiments.  A "mashup" made for romantic suspense and one I hope you can't put down until you get to the very end.

"Wow! I was breathless trying to keep up with the action in Expendable...Expendable is a wild ride, especially after you learn what is considered expendable. No, I'm not giving that away. <grin> A truly frightening villain makes this a fantastic story. If you're in to mysteries and romance, this is definitely a keeper."5 hearts from Kathy F. at The Romance Studio

"...a world that is crazy enough to exist in today's world! It is a scary thought but makes for great page turning, sit on the edge of your chair, Suspense! I am a huge fan of Romantic Suspense and Expendable delivers just what a reader wants. Jenna and Reed are characters that are flawed and human and there are supporting characters that I hope just might find their own stories! Go grab a copy today!"5 coffee cups from Matilda at Coffee Time Romance

" Expendable was such a fantastic read that I wasn't able to stop. I read the whole book in one sitting and found myself often sharing parts with others around me. I hope that there is more to come by Maggie Jaimeson and certainly more with these characters!" -- M Dobson at Sizzling Hot Book Reviews - 5 hearts

Maggie Jaimeson weaves heart-stopping action with the unique premise of biogenetic research. Reed Adler is by far the most believable character as he struggles with near-debilitating flashbacks as part of his PTSD, while still managing to use his considerable skills to stay alive as he fights to unravel the mystery surrounding Jenna, her sister, and her sister's child.

Jenna, while exhibiting definite contrition about her part in her sister's disappearance--and admirable tenacity in not making the same mistakes with her sister's child--is more fragile and not quite a match for her counterpoint Reed.

The fast-moving story succeeds in keeping the reader turning pages. Several points do strain credulity, especially the quick determination of custody of ten-year-old David and the way that Reed and his ex-Marine buddies take the investigation into their own hands with little or no opposition from law enforcement in several jurisdictions.

For those who enjoy a true contemporary thriller interspersed with sizzling romance, Expendable will be a satisfying read.

Expendable is a story full of mystery, suspense, and romance. Jenna and Reed are 2 middle aged individuals brought together by a dead body and a lost child. Jenna finds out that her sister - whom she hasn't seen in 10 years - is found dead. Jenna also finds out that her sister had a child, and it's up to her to find and protect this little boy.

Reed is a former Marine who just recently retired. Not only does he find the body of Jenna's sister and Jenna's nephew David, he also rescues Jenna from the same people who murdered her sister. When Reed and Jenna work together to figure out the murder mystery, they find that there is so much more going on than they could have ever imagined.

I haven't read a book quite like this before. I mostly stick with paranormal romances, and I don't believe I've ever read a book in the mystery/suspense genre. Romance pulls me in every time though, and a nice romance takes place in this story. Reed struggles with having PTSD. He has flashbacks that interfere with his life. I like how both of these characters are flawed, but they both have wonderful qualities as well that help strengthen each other. They are a good fit and they have good chemistry.

The plot in this book is really interesting. The villain in this story is a sick and twisted individual that adds to the complexity of the plot. There's a variety of elements in this book that will attract a variety of readers. If you're a fan of action, mystery, suspense, romance, or even erotica - then this book has something you will enjoy.

War. What does it do to soldiers? To those they come to love?

Jaimeson writes a compelling book that invites us in and won't let go.

Reed suffers from war. Iraq, Afghanistan - but it could have been Viet Nam, Korea or any war. He's honorable, and has experienced horrors that he can't accept. Now he faces a different kind of horror, involving a young boy and that boy's Aunt Jenna.

We go along for the ride, and a wild ride it is, with a budding romance, the innocence of children and the chilling acts of someone who can rationalize away the pain and death of others. The author addresses issues many of us would like to ignore. While not a light read, Jaimeson reminds us that by acknowledging and accepting what is, we begin to allow ourselves to heal. It's a lesson we all need to remember.

What's "love" got to do with it? Well..... Everything and then some. Couldn't put the book down as it kept my attention the whole time and I needed to know what happen next! It was an easy to read, understand and follow book. Can hardly wait for a sequel. The characters are awesome and they all flow so well. The writer so specific and detailed so without a doubt you know what it all looked and felt like. A great story a great book!
