Because HD didn't exist in the Eighties,
This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
Oh man was this a fun movie!
At one point I leaned over to one of my buddies and said, "Best. Movie. Ever." Really. Actually, it probably isn't the best movie ever. But it was a nice throwback to the good old days of 80's movies that I grew up watching with the cheesy Schwarzenegger one-liners and over the top violence where the good guy wins and the bad guy meets his maker in some ridiculous way. There are some over the top visuals that make it worth seeing and hearing; the sound was pretty amazing. And by amazing, I mean loud. Explosions you can feel in your bowels and that's not just the beef and bean burrito from lunch talkin' either. Better than they could do in the Eighties. They missed out on a rematch w/ Lundgren and Stallone. I kept waiting for Lundgren to say, "I will break you" to someone but it never happened. The Schwarzenegger cameo was cool, but he should have thrown someone out of a window or something. Not happening these days. Same w/ Willis; he really has no part in this and didn't seem too menacing to me which was also disappointing. However, the rest of the cast delivered cases of canned butt-whoopin' as if they were FedEx. Here's a typical scene. Statham kicks the tar out of a bunch of knuckleheads: in front of his ex-girlfriend who is dating one of said knuckleheads who, predictably, smacks her around. Too bad for Knucklehead that her ex has more than a passing interest in her and happens to be in a bad mood when he learns of the abuse. Bam. Pow. Smack. Insert one-liner, get the girl back, ride off unharmed w/ hottie on the motorcycle. I think people actually cheered at the fight choreography. I mean, the whole movie is like this. It's brilliant. There are some good comic bits but really, it is simply a throwback movie done with bigger, badder explosions and a lot of your favorite tough guys from the era when action actors were immensely rugged dudes. Muscles ruled, brains, not so much. 5 stars because I can't imagine that they could have recaptured the fun from the Eighties in a better way than they did here. Don't take it seriously and enjoy it for what it is.

Good dumb fun,
By
This review is from: The Expendables (DVD)
The Expendables is good old-fashioned dumb fun in the style of 80's invincible, one-man-army action movies-- you know the kind: impossible odds, endless streams of bullets, useless enemy soldiers who can't shoot the broad side of a barn, and tons of stuff blowing up, whether it needs to or not. If you're here, you came to see the action sequences and the ensemble cast of your favorite action film veterans, not for the spaghetti-thin plot. Once again, the good guys have to rescue the girl. The names are forgettable and the story of a corrupt South/Central-American dictator is pretty much just an excuse for the great fight sequences, absurd shootouts, car chase, and other ridiculously over-the-top stunts and shenanigans. In one scene, for example, the bad guys get strafed from above by the Expendables' seaplane by Lee Christmas (Jason Statham) sitting in a exposed nose turret, then doused with gasoline and the entire dock gets set ablaze with a flare gun, accompanied by a requisite explosion.
The cast includes some of today's hottest action stars (and some nearly forgotten ones of yesteryear), including Jason Statham (Crank, the Transporter), Jet Li, MMA fighter Randy Couture, WWF superstar Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, as well as a cameo from Bruce Willis and Arnold. As a result of all this star power, character development suffers and most of the characters are not fleshed out. We get some back-story about knife-expert Christmas and retired Expendables tattooman Tool (Rourke), but most of the other characters get nothing to work with. I even had trouble remembering some of their names after the movie was over. There are also some very unfunny short jokes aimed at Jet Li's character, Yin Yang. Former NFL player Terry Crews (Everybody Hates Chris: The Complete Series, White Chicks), one of my favorite character actors, is always a pleasure to watch. Here, he is the AA-12 automatic shotgun wielding terror. He brings a shot of energy and comic presence to the film, even if it's for a very short moment: "You know, the enemy will always be terrified of noise. Especially shotguns. With this big boy spittin' out 250 rounds a minute, you tell me who's tolerating that." Even with so few lines, he manages to bring a smile to my face. This is the exception, however. Most of the dialog in this film is corny, forced, and delivered with awkward timing and the finesse of a sledgehammer. Dolf Lundgren and Sly Stallone are as unintelligible as ever, if not more. They haven't aged a day, thanks to the miracle of plastic surgery. Some of their dialog, I really had to strain to understand what they were trying to say, not that what they say matters because it's all terribly unimportant. The scene where Willis, Arnold and Stallone meet in a church is brutally stiff. I've seen better delivery from my pizza man. It really was painful to watch the clumsy exchange. Stone Cold Steve Austen is stone cold dead in this film, being nothing more than a big goon who beats people up. He has zero stage presence. This is mindless summer fun that's inconsequential and requires absolutely no expenditure of brain cells. I do take issue with the way many of the fight sequences are shot and edited, making it difficult to see the action. Jerky camera and fast cuts make it hard to follow what's going on, leaving me a bit disoriented. Other than that and the already mentioned lack of character depth, this movie was entertaining for what it is. It doesn't pretend it's something more than a guns-blazing summer action flick. As I often say for movies like this, leave your brain at the door and enjoy!

The Magnificent Seven of the modern male action movie,
By Dave Cordes (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
When I was a kid, heroes were larger than life. They still are today only with just one exception albeit a pretty significant one... in those days, Men were Men. They weren't pretty but they exuded their God-given male born testosterone with every ounce of testicular sweat dripping on celluloid. For a boy growing up in the 80's they were the male role-models and father figures that inspired impressionable pre-adolescent boys into shaping their adult manhoods. Those were the days of yore.
The Expendables isn't a great film by any stretch of the imagination but it knows exactly what it is trying to be and doesn't pull any punches. It tries to be the The Magnificent Seven of the modern action movie but doesn't quite hit its mark. It's more like the Magnificent Four and a Half (Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, Austin, and Li). The rest of the ensemble more or less being, ahem... expendable. My friend and I once had a similar idea for a movie that would pit all of our favorite 80's action stars into one no-holds-barred-royal-rumble-of-epic-manliness which we appropriately called "Cajones" but that was back in the mid-90's when there was still a chance to see most of these larger-than-life-nut-swingers together onscreen in their prime. The fact that Stallone, now 64, can prove that he still has what it takes and show the younger generations how to make an action movie proper after two successful comebacks with his acclaimed Rocky Balboa and Rambo is a testament that there is still not only a demand but a primal need for REAL movie star icons like Stallone that are legends who defy their generation and age. There is only one thing you need to know about the paint-by-numbers plot and that is this: These titans of manliness have all come here to chew bubble-gum and kick ass, and there is a whole lotta bubble-gum to go around. When the blood and guts start flying it makes Peckinpah look like Walt Disney. If that is the kind of movie you are expecting to see you won't be disappointed. Perhaps the biggest fault with The Expendables is that it never quite lives up to itself. Arnold Schwarzenegger's cameo feels like it was thrown in just for the sake of having the three biggest 80's action icons together at last onscreen for a Hard Rock Cafe Kodak moment. It just feels like 'The Guvinator' shows up to give his quick endorsement before going back to the office. Fortunately Sly has much better things to do these days than bankrupting the state of Culifornia. I was never particularly a fan of so-called "professional" wrestling for all of its phoniness so guys like Stone Cold Steve Austin never really appealed to me but I'll take him and UFC's Randy Couture any day over any so-called leading male action star in Hollywood today just on sheer testosterone levels alone. At least Mickey Rourke showed that not all of professional wrestling is fake with "The Wrestler" but "Iron Man 2" hardly qualifies him as a bona fide action-star, more like Harley Davidson without the Marlboro Man. One look at his fugly face and you can see that his days of "9 1/2 Weeks" with the ladies are long over. Jason Statham is apparently the most masculine male action star Hollywood currently has to offer up and that's not saying too much with a resume consisting of "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels ," "Crank" and "The Transporter" series but I guess baldness apparently qualifies him in the testosterone brigade along with Bruce Willis whose days of headlining as an action star were washed up with the last "Die Hard." The truly expendable were those 80's action icons who didn't quite make the cut like Chuck Norris who for whatever reason was unable to attend Sly's little shindig. As a kid I probably watched every action film that Chuck starred in like "The Octagon," "Good Guys Wear Black," "Lone Wolf McQuade" and "A Force of One." You can't think of the 80's without bringing up Chuck Norris, or the poseurs like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Seagal, all of whom are conspicuously MIA. Apparently Van Dammage was offered a part but he thought the script should have catered to his ego as well as a bigger paycheck so Sly made his part "Expendable." The Expendables is a fun salute to the 80's and a throwback to the days when action films weren't trying to be politically correct and were all about blowing stuff up, flexing their muscles, delivering the one-liners, kicking ass and looking cool. To that end, The Expendables is a blast, but not a slam dunk. It's worth a matinee out of pure sake of nostalgia or a rental. If The Expendables accomplishes one thing it should be this: To send a message to the studios that there is a hunger for masculine male action icons who are on the endangered species list and to ensure their survival in the 21st century which has been corrupted by forgettable momma's boys and blood sucking vampires of the Twilight generation.

AWESOME ... SIMPLY AWESOME!!!,

This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
I had been hearing the buzz about this movie long before ever seeing a preview. I already knew that this would be the best action movie ever made, if for no other reason, just because of the actor lineup and the fact that Sylvester Stallone was heading up the cast! Then I saw the first preview, and I KNEW that this movie was going to be awesome! Sure, the movie critics are going to cut a movie like this down, but usually, if they don't like it, that means that I am going to love it! Sure enough, once again, that proved to be true! This will be the action movie to beat for a long, long time! All I can say is ... BRING IT ON WITH A FOLLOW UP! :-)

The definitive modern day throwback to 80's action,

This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
The Expendables was hands down one of the most fun and exciting theater experiences I've had since I can remember. The plethora of action stars makes it just a lot of fun. It starts out with a bang, has a little bit of a story for filler, and ends with the feeling like someone kicked you in the face with a boot. Thing is, most people don't realize this was a throwback to the 80's when films like Predator, First Blood, Die Hard, and Commando were all the rage. Those movies didn't have oscar winning stories either, but everyone loved them because they were fun. Who can forget Dutch, Dillon, Blaine, and the other team of commandos out in Central America sent to kill the Predator, only to become the prey themselves. John Rambo, the one man army who took on a small town police department. John McClane, the everyday normal guy who got caught in a bad situation and ended up saving the hostages and his marriage. John Matrix, the retired special agent out to find his kidnapped daughter, armed to the teeth with infinite explosives and combat knowledge. If you're a man and get a sense of nostalgia when you think about those films, you owe it to yourself to kick back, turn your brain off, and your testosterone into high gear with a few buddies and enjoy the ride.
Every star has their moment where they shine, but in my theater I don't think anyone got as much enjoyment and praise as Terry Crews when he went to town with the AA-12 shotgun. It was also good to see Dolph Lundgren on screen again. The cameos by Willis and Schwarzenegger just gave it an even more old school feel. I must warn you though, the truth is, you're not going to get something as deep as 'Inception' or something as timeless as 'Citizen Kane'. Film snobs are going to eat this and spit it out like there is no tomorrow, but who cares? Everyone loves a movie with a great story, one that will make you think, and one that will stick with you. This film was made for men who were sick of seeing vampire teenagers falling in love, spoof movies that were never funny in the first place, and movies that paint a picture of all men being evil creatures. I'm looking at YOU Lifetime Channel. The long and short, your girlfriend won't like this, film snobs will tip up their noses, and those who just don't get it will scoff and point out its flaws. But for the men out there who like their action in your face and need a couple of hours to kick back and relax, this film was made..just for you. Here's a personal thank you to Stallone and the entire cast for letting me relive the action films I grew up on in a modern setting.

When I heard about Sylvester Stallone a guy who has directed a lot of his own movies he knows his audience that he was directing the Expendables writing & directing starring as Barney Ross also starring Dolph Lundgren Gunner Jenson,a guy who directs a lot of his own stuff & another guy who knows his audience then Jason Statham as Lee Christmas then Jet Li as Yin Yang
Mickey Roourke Tool Box, Rnady Coulture as Toll Road Stone Cold Steve Austin as Paine he worked well with Gary Daniels Eric Roberts who plays the main villain James Monroe David Zayas as General Garza Giselle Itié as Sandra Bruce Willis & Arnold Schwarzenegger came in for cameos for obvious reasonsI waitedalmost 2 years for this movie & was it worth it? You d**n right it was! It started off slow & got better & better & became f*ç***g awesome. It has some flaws I would've liked more Dolph Lundgren a longer fight between him & Jet Li but I liked Dolph's character of Gunner cause it was kind of close to how crazy his Andrew Scott character was in the original Universal Soldier. Which that style was badly needed in Universal Soldier Regeneration I will always hate USR I watched USR again nothings changed it's still terrible. Since this movie is doing fairly well at the box office maybe LGF can release specialeditions of Punisher 89 & Army Of One. This movie has action out the @** last 20 or 30 minutes was great. The story is simple straight forward & effective & it doesn't get bogged down by politics like Machete. These guys are Mercs who will do any kind of work from killing Somali pirates to stopping a C I A sell out. Basically Barney Ross & his team have to go to some Centeral or South American country to go after James Monroe & to stop the arms trade. Gunner Jenson has a drug problem & he's out of conrol he's following Barney around he doesn't want to be replaced. Ross & Lee check out the island for themselves this is where we meet there contact Sandra. I enjoy the dialoge between Stallone & Statham Lee:"I'm, Buddha & he's Pest." I love the scene where Stallone guns those soldiers down I love when Statham yells "Are you crazy you could've klilled me!" Stallone "You're welcome!" The dock scene was great. I love Mickey Roorke's monolouge which helps Barney Ross go back & save the girl. I like these character I want them to live unlike Predators or Machete. The Stallone, Arnold, Willis scene was quick but great I really hope Arnold Schwarzenegger has a bigger role if there's a sequel but that 1 minute he had was better than his entire screen time in Terminator 3. I sure as h3** would see a sequel. Maye you can incorporate Jean Claude Van Damme maybe he'll say "Yes I'll do it this time Sly!" Instead of trying to impress the high brow crowd. Chuck Norris would be cool since I've never seen him on the big screen. You know maybe Jeff Speakman maybe Mark Dacascos. Randy Coulter I forgot to mention he did a good job a lot better than Andrei Arvlosky in Universal Soldier Regeneration just had to put that in there to upset the Marks of USR. Loved that scene with Terry Crews & that shotgun it needs no explanation. Mickey Roourke had a really good monologue. Stallone & Statham made a great team. I love this movie cause these guys don't try hard to be bad @** there's likeability you want to root for these guys & they don't have to use a 30 year chain smoker voice. Movie earns it's R raiting. I like where Yin Yang wants more money for his family cause the character is a dreamer. You get this really good chase scene with Ross & Gunner & like I said I like the fight between Gunner & Yin Yang Gunner:" What are you wearing a size 3! Bring it happy feet!" The finish is awesome it made the movie it blew me away in the theater lot's of explosions Hale Caesar AA 12 shot gun rocks it's just an awesome finish. This movie set out to be an 80's throwback & it is my favorite movie of the year. It has CGI but it is good CG there's very little it's more old school effects. It's better CGI then Predators & Machete & they get the praise. I really enjoyed the documentaries on the Blu Ray you learn that Stallone & these guys busted there a s s es Stallone nearly killed himself he got hurt & didn't stop production. See I don't respect Seagal anymore cause he's out of shape & he just throws punches & calls it a day lets a stunt double do the rest. So it was simple straight forward entertaining movie.I could talk forever about this movie but I recommend it you should see this movie & give it your full attention. The critics bashed this movie & when I saw it I was like WTF critics what did you expect this wipes it's @zz with your pretty boy Matt Damon & other so called actiom movies I wasn't expecting a greek tragedy or an art film didn't need it didn't want it. Just straight forward action. Thank You Stallone!

Greatest Film ever,
This review is from: The Expendables (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray)
The first time I heard about this movie I literally felt the hair on my testicles grow in length and girth. When I went to the theaters opening night I made sure that I not only get my ticket ahead of time, but I bought out the entire theater for my self so I can watch in the nude to completely absorb this films greatest.
At the conclusion of the film I knew that I had witnessed something more beautiful than Da Vinci's Mona Lisa combined with the second coming of Christ. I knew from that day that I needed to purchase the film for myself. Between the time the film was released in theaters and its release on DVD I swear I slept with probably half the women of Montgomery county. Before watching this film finding any woman to sleep with me outside of the Wal-mart parking lot was an impossibility. I only have this work of art to thank for my new found sex appeal. At the time the film came out in home digital form I spent the night in front of best buy just to be the first person to get it. I bought one copy of the film on Blu Ray (for obvious reasons). and proceeded too empty the inventory of the dvd copies. These DVD's are essential for me to bathe (literally) daily in this film's excellence.

And it's not even my birthday! I mean, damn, what a cool, cool, supercool movie to drop out of the sky, man! You know you're having the time of your life when something has gotten you to jump, shout, laugh, salivate, and cheer your ass off like an out-of-control little boy again. It left me throwing fists and feet in the air and giving high fives to my brothers who also had a hell of a time with it. Watch it alone, watch it with your buddies, and, if a chick is into this sort of thing, you can enjoy it just as much with her, if not more (they're great that way).
One of my brothers had already seen it before and gave me the perfect idea of what to expect. I usually don't watch trailers, because it seems all they do is spoil the fun and build up too much expectation or misconceptions, so I didn't see any for this one. But all my brother did was tell me to remember what it was like when we were kids, playing with those fighter figures that had nothing to do with each other, like Rambo, Commando, He-Man, etc. He said, "Remember when we thought how cool it would be if we had these legends all in one movie? Well, now we do." But like I said, it was just to prepare me. I personally believe the movie still stands on its own without its big stars. They just gave it an extra blast. I could easily call this the ultimate guys' night movie, but let's face it, not all guys were created equal in terms of appreciating the fine manly things in life. So here's how I would recommend it. If it's pure, testosterone-pumped action you really want, then you'd better freakin' mean it. The first few minutes of the movie should be more than enough an adrenaline shot for you to decide. It's a killer opening, so if doesn't get you all pumped up and ready to explode with the joy of watching these guys kick maximum ass, get the hell out of there. It's definitely not for you. Of course, that's not to say it isn't for those who appreciate art and depth. I mean, hey, I love Kubrick, I love Tarantino, but I also love shallow, old-school action like what we got out of the Rambo movies. And I think it's funny when someone says, "this is not a thinking man's movie", as if not being able to enjoy something simple-minded - even if it's this mindblowingly cool - is a trait to be proud of. Your loss, Einstein. The Expendables is so much damn fun that, if you're into its type, you'll gladly tell art or whatever killjoy trying to get in your way to kiss your action-loving ass. I bought this directly without thinking twice, and have grown addicted to it. I swear, I think it's gonna put me in the hospital from watching it too many times. Here's to a sequel!

Expendables delivers! in the style and spirit of the action movie.
Heros should be invincible, have an endless supply of ammo, and hammer the enemy into mush :) lol This is the purpose behind the action movie. Escape reality! Even if it's only for an hour or two :) Anyone self-absorbed enough to be critical of this movie needs to learn to keep their expectations realistic. 5 stars from me, simply because it was exactly what I expected it to be.... enjoyable. |
