This course explores ATM technology and its role in modern telecommunications networks, answering such questions as: “Why was ATM technology developed?” and “What is the format of an ATM cell?” Participants develop a solid foundation for understanding this technology. One of the most important areas the course examines is the built-in quality of service (QoS) capabilities that make ATM a natural fit for multiservice environments. In addition, we review applications for ATM technology with an emphasis on how service providers and other real-world users are deploying ATM to satisfy various networking requirements such as frame relay internetworking, LAN emulation, multiprotocol over ATM, and others.
