The selection is weighted towards his earlier Jimi Hendrix Experience pieces and when possible, shorter versions of the songs are given. There is a good sampling of those here, but the sound quality is overall very flat. Whether you're new to Hendrix or familiar, this cd satisfies. It may leave you wanting more, but personally, I feel all his best songs are accounted for. The only other cd I would strongly suggest buying would be Band of Gypsys which displays Jimi's tremendous talents in concert.

If you haven't agreed with anything I've said thus far, you can't deny that Hendrix was a true innovator of music and in the short 4 years that he recorded music, he accomplished more than most artists do in a lifetime. The Ultimate Experience is proof of that fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate experienced CD right here!, March 14, 2000

As a single-disc compilation, Experience Hendrix: The Best Of is an easy not so hard to beat thing. Drawing from all the original digitally remastered reissue MCA albums. This 20-track collection contain his hits of all the major highpoints in Hendrix's career songs like "Purple Haze", "Foxey Lady", "All Along The Watchtower", "Little Wing", "Red House", "The Wind Cries Mary", "Manic Depression" a live version from Woodstock of "Star Spangled Banner" and "Angel". It gives an accurate impression of why Jimi Hendrix was so revolutionary and influential in rock music history itself. All of his completed studio recordings are mandatory listening. As it is for a terrific guide introduction to this legendary guitarists own groundbreaking work!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!, March 11, 2001
This is truly a fantastic and mind boggling album, chronicling each part of young Jimi Hendrix's blossoming career up until his untimely 1970 death. Every single track is a gem, with fantastic guitar ax work and mind boggling lyrics, sometimes sad, sometimes chilling, and always descriptive and truthful.

In my opinion, the blossoming Hendrix fan cannot go wrong with this album. Each of the twenty tracks was well selected, and each represent different parts of his career. It is truly great, but it doesn't do Jimi complete justice. Live was where Jimi was at his best, as shown by the albums "Live At Woodstock" and "Live at the Fillmore East." I'd recommend picking up both this and a live album.

The finest songs on the collection are Jimi classics "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child," and "Wind Cries Mary," in addition to not so well known tracks like "Angel", and "Night Bird Flying."

If you are new to the world of Jimi and don't know which album to pick up, I advise you to get this record, and get a good overview of the man's entire career.

There is a good sampling of those here, but the sound quality is overall very flat. This is not an especially well remastered recording and if you want to get a sense of how broad and complex a sound this musician was capable of producing you might well look elsewhere. If you just want something to download onto your IPod, this might do it, but it is generally a disappointment and not up to the task.

4.0 out of 5 stars great, it's Jimi for god's sake, July 30, 2000
Jimi Hendrix is the greatest guitarest of all time. In every way.

The music on this CD is all amazing and his virtuosity is evident from the first track. I'm particularly partial to "Voodoo Child" and "Little Wing," but then, what am I saying, they're all fantastic. In fact "All Along the Watchtower" might be the best of them all. Jimi played guitar as if it were the song instead of separate from the song to show off as many noted guitarists did. He became the song.

The reason I gave this only four stars? You are doing yourself a horrible disservice if you don't listen to Jimi live. It is spellbinding. I (naively) considered Paige the best guitarist before I heard Jimi on the Woodstock CD. Him being himself and playing from the soul is incredible. Each note is so spontaneous and so powerful.

Buy this album, but also buy a live one. Both are essential to understand the genius of Hendrix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Genius, not to mention a GOD, January 14, 2002
By
"v0od0ochild" (Saskatoon, SK, Canada) - See all my reviews
Jimi Hendrix lived a short life, but if that can be resolved in anyway, it's that he produced some of the best music I have heard in my young life. People always seem amazed that me, a teenage girl, would listen to this kind of music. I myslef don't know why I love it, I just do. My parents never listened to Jimi, saying he's too loud and repetitive, but they obviously never listened for more than a song and a half. I just recently got into Jimi Hendrix, and I can say that this has probably been one of the most inspiring choices I've ever made. Jimi's music has opened my eyes, not only towards the world itself, but also the world of music. His song "Castles Made Of Sand" inspired me to start playing guitar, and now I can play that and "Purple Haze". This album itself is great, with many of my favourite songs, including "Voodoo Child" (I hate it when people call it Voodoo Chile!) and "Crosstown Traffic", and of course that Hendrix classic "All Along The Watchtower". It disappoints me that there is only one "best of" album, for he had many more good songs. But by far the most disappointing thing, (which has nothing to do with quality), is that not enough people are listening to this lyrical genius. People are too stuck up in the pop music and rap images to even care about quality. Half the people in my school have never even heard of AC/DC, let alone Jimi Hendrix! I just want to say that this cd is great, and that everyone should at least try Jimi Hendrix once, just once. Try him, you might love it, just like I did. And remember, Jimi Hendrix was and always WILL be a God, in his own right.

5.0 out of 5 stars JIMI IS GOD, January 23, 2001
By A Customer
Jimi was, is, and will always be the best...His music has influenced a lot of people, including me...I started playing guitar because of Jimi...But I, and all others who started playing guitar, will never be like Jimi...He was just a genious...No one, including Beck and Clapton, could create unbelievable improvisations like Hendrix..He could come up with unbelievable melodies in a tenth of a second...Everything he wanted to do with the guitar, he did...It is very sad that he died at age 27...And he has been dead longer than he lived...But he left us his great music...And his best songs are on EXPERIENCE HENDRIX: The Best Of Jimi Hendrix...Songs like "Purple Haze", "All Along The Watchtower", Voodoo Child (slight return") will always be popular...But there were some other songs on this CD that weren't great hits but still were great songs..."Night Bird Flying", "Freedom", "Angel", show Hendrix's ability to write great ballads and great funk/blues songs...Of course..This CD deserves 5 stars...but some songs are missing that should have been there..."Hey Baby(New Rising Sun"), which is one of Hendrix's best 5 songs, "Pali Gap" are as good as the ones that are on EXPERIENCE HENDRIX....But one song should have been definetely there...and that song is "Machine Gun"..i know that there was never a studio version of that song...But the version from the "Band of Gypsys" album is just breathtaking...and to me "Machine Gun" is Hendrix's masterpiece...and it should have been included on this Best Of CD...but overall..this is a great Album for people who are not very familiar with Hendrix...but after you buy this Best Of..you should buy "Are you Experienced?", "Axis: Bold As Love", and of course Jimi's masterpiece album, "Electric Ladyland"...But there are some other Hendrix Albums that could show you how great Jimi was...The Box Set, "First Rays of the New Rising Sun", "South Saturn Delta" are great too...and one more time..BUY THIS!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hendrix the master, September 3, 2006
By

If any music lover wishes to break into the works of Jimi Hendrix then this CD is the perfect place to start. To certain uninitiated newcomers there are songs in the Hendrix repertoire that may seem daunting, both in musical complexity and in sheer length. This is where the Experience Hendrix CD comes into its own.

Hendrix contributed a massive wealth of guitar anthems to the world of rock and some of the best are on show here. 'Voodoo Child', 'Purple Haze' and 'All Along The Watchtower' being some of the best known. However this is not to say that rocking guitar solos was all that Jimi did. He also slows the mood with the more laid back 'Castles Made Of Sand', 'Bold As Love' and the beautifully lonesome 'The Wind Cries Mary'.

Jimi Hendrix's career was tragically short, spanning only 4 years. But in that time he managed to unleash some of the best rock songs ever made. To any music fans reading I have one word to say, 'enjoy'.

5.0 out of 5 stars A true pioneer of Rock and Roll, his unique sound is missed, August 8, 2001
By
historyone (Republic of Texas, USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
Jimi Hendrix was a true pioneer of Rock and Roll. His amazing talent and his quest for new sounds leave an impression to all who hear his music and this is 30 years after his passing...

Jimi was the ultimate pioneer in Rock and Roll, never satisfied of his past accomplishments, he wanted to find new ways of expressing his ideas through music, be it blues-fusion-funk-soul or good ol Rock and Roll, he was one of the rare ones who could combine them all into a unique sound for all to enjoy...His sad passing at the young age of 27 left a void in Rock and Roll that is still felt today...If he would of lived what kind of new sounds could he have made? But we will never know...We are left to enjoy the music and sound of his unforgettable voice and guitar...

This is a fantastic selection of his greatest hits. From "Purple Haze" to "The Wind Crys Mary" to "Fire" to his awesome playing of "The Star Spangled Banner", this is a CD that fans of Jimi Hendrix will enjoy and those who rarely heard his music but want to hear more will definitely want to get this CD.

I highly recommend this CD to all Jimi Hendrix admirers and fans of good Rock and unique sound!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good introduction to Jimi., February 11, 2003

Shotgun Method (NY... No, not *that* NY) - See all my reviews
I'm not really crazy about compiliations. Although some are definitely better than most--Rolling Stones Hot Rocks 1963-1971, The Who Ultimate Collection, and Beatles 1 are all pretty good--there's always something missing if you don't purchase the original albums.

And Experience Hendrix is no exception. Where are classics like Burning Of The Midnight Lamp, Like A Rolling Stone, Voodoo Chile, and Machine Gun? Hendrix's short career has a lot of hidden gems that won't be featured in a comprehensive overlook.

However, for a compilation intended to introduce fans to the guitar mastery of Hendrix you can't go wrong. All of the selected material is strong, and I like how they put material from First Rays Of The New Rising Sun on here. The rest of it are mostly popular radio tunes, which does not make them inferior in the least. This is Jimi we're talking about. Few guitarists could approach him in any era.

This will get your foot in the door. Once you become a fan, you will want to seek out Electric Ladyland and Are You Experienced? to supplant this album. You might also want to check out Jimi's live recordings as well.
