I first read Jeanne's autobiography about 2 years ago. I've never read any book other then the Bible itself that had such an effect on my understanding of each days circumstances and how God brings many pleasant as well as unpleasant people and events into our lives for the purpose of making us like His Son, Jesus. Jeanne, through God's Spirit, helped give me a new revelation on Romans 8:28, Proverbs 3:5,6 and Psalms 37:23, all speaking of Providence. God is at work in my life setting me apart for His purpose and making me Holy. I thank Him for this book. Madame Guyon could relate to the Apostle Paul when he says in 2 Corinthians 12:10, "Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distreses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong." If you truly want to be God's and His only, you must read your Bible and this book will help bring you to agree, "Christ in us" can be a reality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Transformative, July 13, 2003

This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
This book has had a more practical and immediate transformative effect on my walk than any other I have read. The first twenty pages alone are worth the price of purchase.

Two types of prayer are offered-- "Praying the Scriptures" and "Beholding the Lord"-- that allowed me to move from a "head" understanding of God towards a much better "heart" understanding. My quiet times have been transformed from a laundry list of my requests for God into a genuine opportunity to abide in his presence. (John 15:4-8)

5.0 out of 5 stars Basic christian living!, July 21, 2002
This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
I've read this book and am now going through it out-lining each chapter. Jeanne Guyon gets back to the basics of Christ Jesus living in us and through us to make a difference for us. She is very much like Paul in her thinking as in this book she points out again and again that the works of our flesh count for nothing. But, what does count is Christ Jesus living in us and loving through us. She is also careful to point out certain points of growth that all christians must go through, such as an initial time of feeling God's presence and dry times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the Christian life,, May 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
It is the most awsome book I've ever read, besides the bible. It will give you knowledge of the Christ that lives within us as Christians, it is very exciting, but very deep. It is profound!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Pray, July 29, 2000
This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book. Madame Guyon (1648-1717) describes a "short and very easy mehod of prayer; which all can practice with the greatest facility, and arrive in a short time, by its means, at a high degree of perfection." She talks directly to the reader in a patient voice. The beginning of the book is for people who are just starting out to pray. From that part, I learned about "praying the scripture", which involves reading carefully. Finally, the book ends with what Madame Guyon calls the "ultimate stage of Christian experience. Divine Union" If you are interested in learning to pray, this is an interesting book for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiencing the Depts of Jesus Christ, May 12, 2000
This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
Without doubt the most important book I've read.

Madame Guyon has reached depths in Christ which we cannot understand without having gone there ourselves. This book will inspire all to go deeper in there walk, no matter where they find themselves.

A must read for every Christian. Truly a classic. Most important piece of literature from any century. I will reread many times.

4.0 out of 5 stars Jesus is the way and the truth., May 5, 2005

This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
Mme. Guyon's spiritual writing is well worth the read. I have read many of the saints and their journeys and I would consider Mme. Guyon to be in their company.

Like Saint Teresa of Avila The Life of Saint Teresa of Avila by Herself (Penguin Classics), Saint Catherine of Siena The Life of St. Catherine of Siena and Saint Terese of Lisieux Autobiography Of A Saint one finds the writings of Mme. Guyon to touch on the stages of prayer and contemplation in the same manner.

I have found these particular saints and Mme. Guyon to be very familiar especially as the suffering servant.

Another comparison would be in the area of spiritual perfection. These very pious and contemplative women's ultimate goal is union with Jesus.

One needs to be careful as not to compare oneself with another's spiritual journey. We are all on the journey, some will approach in different directions. Some of us will take one step forward and two steps backwards.

It is very diffictult to strive for perfection and one can become addicted to the process. It is better to let go of one's aspirations and let it be, all will be completed in God's own time. One cannot rush the process, it will set one backwards if one tries to get ahead, it will create chaos in one's life.

It is very difficult to become another's spiritual guide. There are many spiritual author's who have given us much of their own experience but one has to pray for discernment in choosing the path that one will follow.

Jesus is the way and the truth. All will come to fruition, all will be completed. The kingdom is here within each and everyone of us.

Ascension Thursday May 5, 2005.

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenging, September 10, 2005

This review is from: Experiencing the Depths of Jesus Christ (Library of Spiritual Classics, Volume 2) (Paperback)
This book challenged my level of relationship with God. While I thought that I was committed, this book caused me to evaluate my life and recognize where part of my commitment was nothing more than 'lip-service'. To anyone who wants an intimate relationship with God that is real and vital, this book is a must read.
