Well, what more can you say? This album, like everything I've heard from these guys, is great. If you've never heard them before, do yourself a favor and get everything you can find by them. I have four discs by these guys, all of them great. Experiment has the same funky edge as everything prior to it. It also has accoustic, percussion and electric guitar highlights mixed in. I'm obviously not good at vocalizing the true feel of the disc, but suffice it to say, Buy this album, you will love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulhat has done it again!, September 18, 2000

But this time better than ever. I heard some of these new songs played live, picked up this album as a result, and it hasn't been out of my cd player since. This album is bouyant, tight, and freewheeling without being cloying or overstuffed with crazy extended superjams. As always their lyrics are incredibly fun as well as intelligent, and Kevin McKinney sings them with muscle and kinetic style. They turn a mean metaphor, and always manage to make me smile. I think "Plastic", "Mailbox", and "WNBA" have to be the standouts (or at least my favorites) All in all a fine, polished and cohesive album, and one everyone should add to their collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars hypothesis still not proven wrong..., September 13, 2000
This review is from: Experiment On A Flat Plane (Audio CD)
I think it would be easy to compare this disc to the previous Soulhat discs, as a way to judge or decide quality. Especially given the range of styles Soulhat has unleased on their fans to-date. Let's not. This disc stands on its own incredibly well. Frosty's drumming, especially on the title track, is amazingly crisp and powerful. Listening to his performance reminds me of seeing him live, in the old Antoines, and being blown away by how quickly he moved, and his precision within that speed. It's too bad he quit the band, again. There's a quality to Kevin's songwriting that puts me in a mood of feeling good. It's not necessarily happy music, more like intelligent music. This disc just makes sense to me. The songs unfold in a way that it's obvious this is the way these songs are supposed to be played. They just feel right. Experiment on a flat plane-Kevin knows how to combine acoustic and electric incredibly well. Taking an old Soulhat theme and building it up to a new level. It's also nice to hear another studio version of My Man Joe. Pay attention to what is not obvious first time thru, and what's not obvious while you're doing something else. There's more there than you may realize, in a Goetheian sort of way. I strongly recommend this disc-I can't take it out of my player and I'm constantly singing the songs and lyrics to myself throughout the day.

Soulhat's "Experiment on a Flat Plane", consists of sweet melodies with perfect supporting rythms and drum beats. Track two, "Plastic" is a clear example of this. A real must have album for anyone that loves music. And if you hate music. . . it is the kind of album that will change your views.
