More Stuff You Can't Get Out of Your Head,
By
This review is from: Experiment In Error (Audio CD)
Everyone who I've turned onto a Shibb CD thinks it's weird the first time they play it. "Where are the vocals?" they invariably ask. But, despite their initial hesitation, they always play the CD a second time--always. And after the third time they've played it, they start telling me about which tunes are stuck in their heads. This is the stuff of all great pop art. At first it seems as simple and familiar as a radio jingle (or painting of a Soup Can). Then you start noticing the oddness of it. Then the true complexity. Then once you get over the details you notice the whole again, and it becomes just fun as hell, and as familiar as the theme from Good Times. Then you start noticing how odd it is again, and you're all the way full circle and ready to start all over. Whatever the opposite of "disposable" music is--Shibboleth is it! When I think of Shibboleth and their "so retro it's new" sound, I'm reminded of a line from one of the late, great James Brown's last songs: "Forget about the past, watch me in your rear view mirror glass--I'm gone!" Shibboleth is gone, too--I mean, gone man, real gone! |
