5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive astroman
I remember the first track I heard off this album -- King of the Monsters -- and my reaction at the time: "Holy [expicitive]! This is the best thing I've ever heard!" I ordered the album at that moment and waited anxiously for its arrival.

When it finally came, I popped it into the changer with reckless abandon. A track called "Television Fission"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive astroman, September 15, 2002

I remember the first track I heard off this album -- King of the Monsters -- and my reaction at the time: "Holy [expicitive]! This is the best thing I've ever heard!" I ordered the album at that moment and waited anxiously for its arrival.

When it finally came, I popped it into the changer with reckless abandon. A track called "Television Fission" came on, and it was the aural equivalent of losing one's virginity -- it's that damn good. I cannot even describe these tracks in words, for it would never do them justice. Listen to the sound clips and hear it for yourself. This is _the_ definitive Man or Astroman album.

I consider this album to be one of the best out of any that uses a guitar, and it has made me an Astroman fan for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sleeper band of the 90s, April 7, 2005
This review is from: Experiment Zero (Audio CD)
Look, simply put, MOAM was a band that was always ahead of the curve. They played traditional surf WAY before Pulp Fiction came out and popularized it. Many of the (now) signature sounds in a lot of emo and (dare I say it?) "hardcore" were pioneered by MOAM in their last three albums.
Experiment Zero was the nice middle ground between these periods.
Personally, I consider it to be their best work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sci-Fi Surf Rocks!, August 6, 1999
This review is from: Experiment Zero (Audio CD)
Man or Astroman is a one of a kind band. How many other bandshave you heard that combine surf music with Sci-fi sound effects andclips? Most of the songs on this CD have few or no words. Instead they chose to pay attention to the guitar riffs and drum parts. It's great for listening to while you're driving in your car. Let me tell you, this music is exciting.

5.0 out of 5 stars the space race has been won, March 22, 1999

I have a similar story. It all started for me about five years ago when I awoke from a nap and heard an interview with Man...or Astro-man? on N.P.R. Intrigued by this I promptly picked up "Destroy all astro-men." These guys RULE THE UNIVERSE and "Experiment Zero" confirms it. Buy this and set yourself free from the evil clutches of main stream music. We're all in this together!

It all began about 2 years ago while I was living in Italy.I was up at about 3.am and watching German Television and I saw the greatest band of all time Man Or Astroman? It would be about a year later when I purchesed this album..and it actually lifted my off the floor. The songs are so fresh..so unlike corporate rock..they are scary, powerful, and humorous at the same time.BUY THIS AND BE ENLIGHTENED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiment Zero is One Album that Defines Man or Astroman, May 16, 2001

Man or Astroman is one of the best surf/punk band that is out there. Although the punk part is something I would question but the surf is there for sure. As of the rest of the albums that Man or Astroman have put out this one of their best. They start it with Television Fission and continue with a great compilation, all the way until that last song,Principles Unknown. Although my personal favorite is Test Driver, DNI and The Evil Plans Of Planet Spectra are excellent songs as well. This is a good album to own, especially if you love surf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lab Coats Make Contact, June 21, 2006
This review is from: Experiment Zero (Audio CD)
I'd describe this as lab coats meet alien robot races from outer space. Atomic era transistors, threats of war, theremins in full force.

Experiment Zero is almost a movie in itself as the story unfolds with a speaker test in the lab. Channels, frequencies, volume, etc... are all tested in true 50's form. Once the controls have been adjusted, the music begins in full force as the lab coats have their fun just getting warmed up. As Experiment Zero moves into it's meaty section, the theme focuses on the scientist's efforts to contact outer space with Television Fission, DNI, and Planet Collision. Guitars are raw, fast, high powered, yet retain just enough twang to keep it cool. Like a true Hollywood film with parallel action, attention quickly changes to outer space where evil robots have taken over planets and claimed machinery for their evil efforts along the way. Meanwhile back at the dude ranch, mushroom clouds have spawned all over the earth with Anoxia. Lives are desperate and melancholy to end side one.

After a few half-lives, the meaty portion of the album arrives as life emerges from the radioactive ashes and the lab coats test their survival skills on the desolate planet with Maximum Radiation Level - a quick, yet groovy offering from StarCrunch's school of riffs that will surely get your heart pounding on the dime. Attention then moves back to outer space where the monster robot races are coming to life once again before setting destination Earth. Birdstuff's tom-tom drums pace King of the Monsters as a foreshadowing to what's to come. Think of a dark torch lit cavern a la the halls of montezuma where a giant machine of death lies behind king kong sized doors waiting to be activated for duty.

the next few songs are all about the robots and their surge to universal domination. Cyborg Control is a full force charge onto mankind claiming everythnig in their path for their own destuctive purposes. Test Driver and Television Man are borrowed and covered here, but fit really well. ZX-3 continues the robot domination, but this time earth gets revenge as it has it's own secret weapon ready for take off. A minimalist number, but very effective as it perfectly describes the war and determination of the free world. principles unknown is exactly that. It's anybody's guess who wins the war, but whatever the case, chaos was everywhere as Coco's theremin comes in full force and sends you into a dizzy. Lots of movement in this track until it finally slows down to the same silence from which it all began. this album loops really well if you hit the repeat button.

Where have I been? This album has been out for 9 years (yikes!) and my eyes have only just been opened to the ionization that is Man or Astro-Man(MoAM). MoAM is generally brilliant, but this album is the manifestation of their fullest scintillation. These guys are way ahead of their neo-retro timelessness. Let their electromagnetic radiation wash over you.
