4.0 out of 5 stars Rather good book
So this happens to be a rather solid book. I am not an Organic Chemist so I needed to review the "basics" and this book is stellar. If you have the basics down this is not the boo for you. The writing is basically for an advanced undergraduate level. Better than my other OChem book for sure.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent lab manual but not the greatest
I used this lab manual for organic chemistry I and II lab at the undergrad level, and it was a pretty decent book. The background and prelab info is sufficient and gives you some insight to the underlying chemistry behind the experiment. However, unless you're taking an organic chemistry lecture concurrently that is in line with the text, then you will be lost in terms of...

This review is from: Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach (Brooks/Cole Laboratory Series for Organic Chemistry) (Hardcover)
I used this lab manual for organic chemistry I and II lab at the undergrad level, and it was a pretty decent book. The background and prelab info is sufficient and gives you some insight to the underlying chemistry behind the experiment. However, unless you're taking an organic chemistry lecture concurrently that is in line with the text, then you will be lost in terms of understanding the chemistry behind what you're doing, and you'll be searching for answers online.

they've released a newer edition of this text which is extremely expensive, but the content is the same. they've only switched around some of the pages so the pagination is only off slightly. I would get this edition rather than the newer one since it is much much cheaper for the same material.

Needed it for my organic chemistry lab.
Has helpful diagrams of the apparatus I have needed so far and fairly detailed instructions.
Its use is limited in the current course i'm taking, but I could see future use for it in other areas of my education.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Beginner's Book, February 3, 2011

I found this book to be very helpful; especially the sections before the labs. The sections give a short explanation of what's going on in your lab from a theoretical understanding before you apply it, so you actually get something out of the lab. I found the lab portions to be slightly confusing at times, but I find most lab overviews usually seem to be before performing the experiment (then it all starts to make sense).

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Choice for Organic Chem Lab, September 16, 2009

This review is from: Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach (Brooks/Cole Laboratory Series for Organic Chemistry) (Hardcover)
So far so good. I've only had one week of Organic Chem lab, but the book is clear. There are enough pictures, especially of the glassware set-up and you can choose which chemical you want to use (assuming your lab teacher also lets you choose...)

I needed this book for a lab at UMD. Ordering the item was very easy and it came in new condition for a good price.
