Book Description

October 9, 2001 0030340632 978-0030340635 3
This proven and well-tested laboratory manual for organic chemistry students contains procedures for both miniscale (also known as small scale) and microscale users. This lab manual gives students all the necessary background to enter the laboratory with the knowledge to perform the experiments with confidence. For the microscale labs, experiments were chosen to provide tangible quantities of material, which can then be analyzed. Chapters 1-2 introduce students to the equipment, record keeping, and safety of the laboratory. Chapters 3-6, and 8 are designed to introduce students to laboratory techniques needed to perform all experiments. In Chapters 7 and 9 through 20, students are required to use the techniques to synthesize compounds and analyze their properties. In Chapter 21, students are introduced to multi-step syntheses of organic compounds, a practice well known in chemical industry. In Chapter 23, students are asked to solve structures of unknown compounds. Chapter 24 introduces students to reading the literature in organic chemistry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Rather good book, July 23, 2011

This review is from: Experimental Organic Chemistry: A Miniscale and Microscale Approach (with CD-ROM) (Hardcover)
So this happens to be a rather solid book. I am not an Organic Chemist so I needed to review the "basics" and this book is stellar. If you have the basics down this is not the boo for you. The writing is basically for an advanced undergraduate level. Better than my other OChem book for sure.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent lab manual but not the greatest, January 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I used this lab manual for organic chemistry I and II lab at the undergrad level, and it was a pretty decent book. The background and prelab info is sufficient and gives you some insight to the underlying chemistry behind the experiment. However, unless you're taking an organic chemistry lecture concurrently that is in line with the text, then you will be lost in terms of understanding the chemistry behind what you're doing, and you'll be searching for answers online.

they've released a newer edition of this text which is extremely expensive, but the content is the same. they've only switched around some of the pages so the pagination is only off slightly. I would get this edition rather than the newer one since it is much much cheaper for the same material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Serves it purpose., July 7, 2011

Needed it for my organic chemistry lab.

Has helpful diagrams of the apparatus I have needed so far and fairly detailed instructions.

Its use is limited in the current course i'm taking, but I could see future use for it in other areas of my education.
