April 1997 Venture Book
Experiments and activities reinforce a general discussion of the properties of light, the electromagnetic spectrum, and color vision, that also outlines the fifteen ways in which electron interactions result in color.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up. A well-written, informative book that goes beyond a basic prism-and-rainbow consideration of light and color. Nassau defines what color is and explores how and why we see it. He discusses the complexities of the science behind color and uses interesting examples and experiments that make the topics more understandable. For example, he explains the intense blueness of the Hope diamond as being due to the inclusion of boron impurities in the gem?it is a doped semiconductor. Excellent-quality, full-color photographs and captioned and labeled diagrams and tables supplement the text. Most of the 17 suggested projects can be done with readily available materials and with minimum adult supervision. Suggestions for further reading include Robert Gardner's Experimenting with Light (Watts, 1991) as well as books requiring a more advanced understanding of physics, chemistry, and biology. A good resource for those curious about the nature of light and color and for students writing reports or looking for science-fair projects.?Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA
