Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- A collection of 42 experiments that are fairly easy to follow. Those at the beginning are uncomplicated (static electricity in household items); as the book progresses, they become gradually more complex (simple motor, wind turbine). Clear, step-by-step instructions are neatly laid out; black-and-white illustrations show the materials required. Cautionary notes are included within the instructions, though unfortunately bold print is used for emphasis only occasionally. Each chapter's introduction has short and generally unexciting profiles of famous figures in the field, such as Edison and Volta. A "background information" section explains concepts briefly but accurately. There is little elaboration within the activities themselves. Students must observe and make conclusions on their own, with few hints from the text. The "time to think" sections pose questions that experienced students can use to expand upon the results. Those without solid background, however, might not understand the results even if the procedures work as intended. The experiments are varied and fairly inventive, but the lack of engaging supporting material limits their usefulness. Irwin Math's Wires and Watts (1981) and More Wires and Watts (1988, both Scribners) and Bernie Zubrowski's Blinkers and Buzzers (Morrow, 1991) do a better job. --Steven Engelfried, Alameda County Library,
