Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8 Both books begin with brief histories of their instruments and credit to the first scientists to use them. The components of each instrument are described in the text and illustrated with black-and-white line drawings. Each book concentrates on experiments to learn how to use the instrument in exploring either the invisible world of tiny objects or the vast reaches of space. For the microscope the interesting and curiosity-arousing ideas are categorized by everyday objects (the letter "e" cut out of a newspaper), plants, animals (including how to wrap a live goldfish in moist paper to keep it alive for the few minutes it takes to observe the circulation of blood in its tail), and the life in a drop of pond (or stream, river, or brook) water. Cautions about handling equipment; cutting or slicing samples from potatoes, apricots, flies, and beef; and drawing a drop of blood from your finger are italicized for emphasis. After some very down-to-earth advice for viewing land objects with the telescope ("DON'T snoop on the neighbors" and "DON'T look directly at the sun"), experiments for examining other targets in the nighttime sky are described. Very practical tips on what to wear and how to cope with the darkness are given. The chapters which follow concentrate on aspects of the moon, the sun, the planets, the stars, and beyond. Both books list supply sources. Frances E. Millhouser, Prince William Library System, Va.
