5.0 out of 5 stars Varied and Engaging, March 30, 2009
The forty stories in this collection are quite varied in genre and tone, but with similar themes and motifs throughout that make it an engaging, unified read. Story titles like "Letters from the Laboratory," and "Poppy the Girl of my Dreams, and the Alien Invasion I can detect like radar through my braces" are immediately intriguing, as are the beautiful black and white illustrations introducing each story. Some of the stories ("Lost in the Penguin Tunnel"; "Another Light Called 1-47") are simple and sweet, almost idyllic; others ("Black Flies Inside"; "The Animals have seized the diamond sea kingdom") are quite graphic and dark. However, the overall writing is haunting and evocative, defying easy categorization - which I think makes the writing all the more interesting. A great collection for lovers of thought-provoking, genre-bending fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Experiments at 3 Billion AM: Brilliant and Bizarre, November 9, 2009

This review is from: Experiments at 3 Billion A.M. (Paperback) (Paperback)
For the record, Alexander Zelenyj's brilliant and bizarre Experiments At 3 Billion A.M. is a must-read. Zelenyj's fiction is both startling and a genuine comfort; his poetic tales accomplish the seemingly impossible by granting his readers the opportunity to experience the world through eyes wholly new. The slipstream stories contained herein, ranging from playful to outright apocalyptic, are unique and simply extraordinary. Captivating, charming, and a challenge to our preconceived understandings of life, love, and all things both worldly and otherworldly, the weighty Experiments At 3 Billion A.M. is a tome to be treasured.
