Book Description

April 1, 2007 The Loop Trilogy
Restored to the author's original version, Experiments in Life and Deaf is the second book in The Loop Trilogy. It's a brilliant, hyper-real vision of coming of age in working-class America.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

In this second volume of a projected trilogy, Rosenthal continues the story begun in Loop's Progress (Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1986). Narrator Jarvis Loop has now teamed up with Karl Marxman to become a pirate on Lake Erie. Among the other unlikely characters are Stinky Jinx, an effeminate star athlete who convinces the whole football team to wear rose and baby blue uniforms with matching scarfs, and Red Loop, whose bowling ball can demolish a bomb shelter. Combining gritty working-class realism with exuberant fantasy, Rosenthal clearly has a gift for outrageously comic hyperbole; but his offbeat humor will not appeal to all readers. Albert E. From the Back Cover

Experiments with Life and Deaf offers a brilliant, hyper-real vision of coming of age in working-class America sweeping from the wildest of inspired comedy to the darkest pathos. At the heart of these adventures is 17-year-old Jarvis Loop, a fugitive from the law for an every-increasing list of offenses, who is in love with the pale and mysterious photographer Kara Ruzci, a woman possessed by another man's ghost. From the opening call to arms (as Erie, Pennsylvania prepares for the Cuban Missile Crisis) to sister Neda's successful construction of a rocket to beat Sputnik, to the drug-induced enlightenment of Willie and his black leather-jacketed gang, the Dialecticians, who will aid and abet Jarvis's search or and confrontation with Kara's ghostly lover, Chuck Rosenthal's novel amply confirms him as one of the most powerful and offbeat voice writing today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Take Heart, Chuck Rosenthal!, February 9, 2000

I read this book ten years ago, and I still pull it off the shelf at times, just to laugh. Open to a random page, and there will be something worth your time. All his characters are oversized and absurd, and somehow truly believable. And I still believe the last two pages of this novel are the most heartbreaking prose nobody else has read. Find it, read it, wish you could write like him.
