Book Description

In this third edition the authors have written a guide to the essentials of plant tissue culture. The book takes the reader through a graded series of experimental protocols and provides an introductory review of each topic. There are discussions of aseptic techniques, and nutritional components of media. Subsequent chapters cover such topics as callus formation, organogenesis, xylem cell differentiation, root cultures, cell suspensions, micropropagation by buds, somatic embryogenesis, protoplast culture and fusion, secondary metabolite production, and quantitation of procedures. A glossary, commercial sources of supplies, and the formulations of culture media are also included. This new edition has been completely revised and updated. The organization has been improved, and new illustrations have been added, together with new experiments on such topics as potato callus formation, and embryo culture. This book will be useful to graduate students and professionals in plant science, forestry, agronomy, and horticulture.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This well thought out book does considerably more than is claimed in the title. It not only takes the reader through a graded series of experimental protocols covering the major techniques used in plant tissue culture, it also provides a good introductory review of each topic." Trends in Biochemical Sciences

"...a worthy text and an excellent addition to any plant science laboratory." British Society for Developmental Biology

"This small book is a gem....The revisions have kept the same, excellent format, but have added, updated and refined information and experiments and rearranged topics to form a more logical sequence....The result is an excellent volume that fulfills its promises and carries on the success of the earlier versions: It is an excellent primer. The new arrangement is fine....I especially appreciated the reasoned analysis of past discoveries, the effort to discuss the basic biology of responses in cultures, and the attention to the small details that often mean the difference between success and failure....This compact, informative little jewel of a book should serve that audience, and many others, very well indeed." Philip V. Ammirato, New Biological Books

This book answered all of my questions regarding cultivating plants from tissue samples. The photographs and illustrations are fabulous. Being a botany major I seek out books that teach me new and improved techniques when it comes to plants. This book will remain in my personal library forever.
