Book Description

Stan Lippman is one of the best-selling authors on C++ and has long been one of the major contributors to its growth and standardization. He is the architect C++/CLI, Microsoft's latest extension to C++. Under his guidance, experienced C++ developer and trainer – and Visual C++ MVP -- Marcus Heege, explains how the core C++/CLI language elements work and, just as important, how Microsoft intends them to be used.

Though written by experts, and full of sound, expert insight and advice, this book can be read profitably by any C++ programmer. Short code examples concisely illustrate concepts, and more elaborate examples show how C++/CLI is best used. Even programmers new to C++/CLI, but planning to migrate to it from another language, can use this book to understand core language elements crucial to planning and migrating effectively.

5.0 out of 5 stars The next level, October 30, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Expert C++/CLI: .NET for Visual C++ Programmers (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
This book pretty much assumes you have some basic C++/CLI knowledge.
But, if you are like me, you will pick that basic knowledge on your own from the web and then you will probably buy this book :)
This book has just the right piece of advice for all the coders who can learn the basics on their own but at the same time need to make sure they are doing things right.
This book will give you that extra confidence and will take you to the next level.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best on the Subject - but often 'in the weeds', January 30, 2010

This review is from: Expert C++/CLI: .NET for Visual C++ Programmers (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
This is probably the best book on the subject. However, I find that the C++/C# (.NET) books tend to dive too deep in the weeds...

A few years ago I worked where we did 90% Microsoft development, but for the past few years I've developed with nearly 100% Java. I recently had a project where I needed to do some C++/.NET work so I wanted a good reference.

Like I said, I found this book to be excellent. It covered everything I needed, and explained the information so it was easy to understand and apply to my project. However, I found it annoying that all of the .NET books I looked at (including this one) wanted to keep dropping down to examples of how the code was converted to CLR instructions. Although this is interesting (from a CS perspective) it tends to get in the way of me finding what I need to know to complete my project in two weeks!

I definitely recommend this book - but I would like to see some of the .NET/CLR authors look up and stop assuming that we need to know how the code converts to machine instructions (this from someone that has written a lot of assembly-code).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, well written, May 4, 2009

This review is from: Expert C++/CLI: .NET for Visual C++ Programmers (Expert's Voice in .NET) (Hardcover)
I really like this book. It goes into depth and is very well written. It's the kind of writing that a professional programmer looks for because it goes straight to the punch and doesn't waste your time.
