Book Description

0124438806 978-0124438804 September 13, 2001 1
This six-volume set presents cutting-edge advances and applications of expert systems. Because expert systems combine the expertise of engineers, computer scientists, and computer programmers, each group will benefit from buying this important reference work.

An "expert system" is a knowledge-based computer system that emulates the decision-making ability of a human expert. The primary role of the expert system is to perform appropriate functions under the close supervision of the human, whose work is supported by that expert system. In the reverse, this same expert system can monitor and double check the human in the performance of a task. Human-computer interaction in our highly complex world requires the development of a wide array of expert systems.

Key Features
* Expert systems techniques and applications are presented for a diverse array of topics including:
* Experimental design and decision support
* The integration of machine learning with knowledge acquisition for the design of expert systems
* Process planning in design and manufacturing systems and process control applications
* Knowledge discovery in large-scale knowledge bases
* Robotic systems
* Geograhphic information systems
* Image analysis, recognition and interpretation
* Cellular automata methods for pattern recognition
* Real-time fault tolerant control systems
* CAD-based vision systems in pattern matching processes
* Financial systems
* Agricultural applications
* Medical diagnosis

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This comprehensive, six-volume set examines the latest advances in expert systems, an artificial intelligence (A.I.) application that uses human knowledge for problem solving. Aided by more than 100 international contributors from academic and research institutions and the business world, Leondes (emeritus, UCLA) opens with the history of A.I. and provides an overview of applications in the many fields that employ expert systems, including business, education, healthcare, and transportation. The design of intelligent systems, decision support, and knowledge discovery are also discussed, as are models from several sectors (e.g., manufacturing, architecture and construction design, and medical diagnosis). The set has 50 chapters, each with an introduction, outline, and references. The editor suggests that the volumes can be used separately, and the first volume does make a good introductory text. However, while each volume contains the table of contents for the entire set, the index is found only in the last volume. A good, basic reference text on expert systems, this is recommended for academic libraries, especially those with engineering and computer science collections. Colleen Cuddy, New York Univ. Sch. of Medicine Lib.
