I was a drug analyst with a crime lab, and went solo for personal reasons. I was hoping to find a book that would help someone like me draw up a marketing plan and a contract. You know, some of the in's and out's of self-employment.
Although I was able to pull a few gems from it (I was able to create a contract via the suggestions in this book), in general this book is not written for people like me. It is geared more towards professional who will be offering opinion testimony from specific fields, such as engineers or doctors. It is great for someone like that, but not necessarily for someone who has worked in a lab. Don't get me wrong - to me, this book was worth the price just for its insights into developing a contract. After all, if you are already in the forensic field, you know how lawyers are about contracts. It's just that you will get a lot more out of this if you are a non-forensic professional looking to offer forensic testimony.

Author Rosalie Hamilton has penned a very practical guidebook for those who wish to launch an expert witness practice. She effectively drives home the point that it's not enough to have great credentials and expertise. If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it make a noise? If you have all the credentials and expertise in the world but nobody knows, will you ever get hired? Likely not.
You must COMMUNICATE your abilities and the types of services and solutions you offer. Hamilton discusses word of mouth, networking, harnessing the Internet, paid directories, etc. No detail is too small. The appendices are packed with useful information. If you are thinking of launching your own expert witness or consulting practice, this book is a MUST-HAVE "bible" to get, read and heed!

After reading The Expert Witness: A Manual for Experts, I needed to learn how to get my business off the ground. This book was an amazing resource for not only the "what's" but the "how's" and the "why's." It has many examples and illustrations, and it's very well written. If you're just starting out in this business, you really need this book.
