5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very well written, comprehensive book on the problems of allergies in modern day society!, December 31, 2009
This review is from: Explaining Food Allergies (Library Binding)
Sometimes our bodies are intolerant of certain foods, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we are allergic to them. For example, we hear many people who cannot tolerate milk and are lactose intolerant. Other times people simply have an aversion to certain foods and once again, even though they may exhibit certain symptoms such as a rash, this doesn't necessarily mean they have allergies. An allergy "is a real reaction by a person's body" to certain foods. Some of the more common allergies include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, shellfish, fish and rice.

In this book you will learn important things like the "signs and symptoms" of food allergies. Not all people are affected in the same way and the descriptions might encourage you to visit an allergist or your physician. You'll read about very serious allergies that result in anaphylaxis, an instantaneous and serious reaction to a certain food. You also learn about how you get tested for allergies, how to make sure you do not needlessly expose yourself to allergens, how you may be treated for your allergies, the reason food allergies may be becoming more common, food allergies and inheritance, the prognosis, how you can live with your allergies, certain reasons for allergies in the 21st century, and how scientists are hoping to tackle this problem.

This is a very well written, comprehensive book on the problems of allergies in modern day society. This book does not gloss over allergies, but rather goes into some amount of detail in each section. Because allergies to such things as peanuts can be life threatening, this would be an excellent book for classroom use. This is one is a series books that explain disability issues in children and adults. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book, organization and web site resources.
