5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Oakland style
Oakland had such a big scene and established its own sound in the 90's which was completely on top of things. You can tell when you hear tracks roughly where they came from. This place had tons and tons of heavy pumping bass with the funk tracks. In 94 this Dru down album was right in with the best of the others and held it's position without slipping one bit. The...

3.0 out of 5 stars UNDERGROUND STYLE RAP
I used to own this cd but taped the good stuff and sold. On here, you will find perhaps one of the best beats in music on "pimp of the year" everyone loves this song. It's a classic. The other stuff varies but undoubtedly pulles it's weight. I'd reccommend it to anyone who likes real gangster/pimp style rap from Oakland.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Oakland style, April 13, 2005

Oakland had such a big scene and established its own sound in the 90's which was completely on top of things. You can tell when you hear tracks roughly where they came from. This place had tons and tons of heavy pumping bass with the funk tracks. In 94 this Dru down album was right in with the best of the others and held it's position without slipping one bit. The production and samples mixed and mastered were excellent and on point. The style of dru's vocals are cool too, he is one of the people you could point out on a track straight away. Aswel as this, it also has the luniz who were coming up in oakland at this time too which means that the whole CD is a straight classic really. This was around the time when their was beef starting between dru, the luniz and too $hort. It all brings back memories. If you don't have this, make sure you check it out, its heavy. And you might want ant banks, goldy in the land of funk(sounds like banks but has a better flow with same type beats),bad'n'fluenz(straight O classic, r.i.p rappin ron), too shorts 'get in where you fit in' album. fucc, theres too many more to mention. Later!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best west coast rap albums ever made, IMO!, January 5, 2009

This review is from: Explicit Game (Audio CD)
The beats are hot from beginning to end, the lyrics are great (especially in the songs that the Luniz are featured on), and the overall feel of the album is perfectly described as "pimped-out". Anyone who likes hardcore or gangsta rap music will like this album from the second they put it in their player. I've had this on tape for years and it's so good that I just bought the CD version to add to my collection. It's good enough that if CDs ever go by the wayside, I'll pick this up on whatever new medium it comes out on too. Love this shiznit right here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dru Down Lays Down Some Explicit Game, February 24, 2005
This review is from: Explicit Game (Audio CD)
Dru Down opens up his career with the release of "Explicit Game" back in 1994. The CD starts off with the bay area classic "Pimp of the Year" in Ant Banks put down some serious trunk rattling bass for Dru to lace the track. That track did not get any airplay here in St. Louis as well as a lot of non-mainstream acts from the west coast. Another track that is dope is "Rescue 911" in which my favorite producer on the planet Anthony "Tone Capone" Gilmour hooks up with Yukmouth of the Luniz starting off. This CD did introduce the Luniz on here. Also, the next track "Realer Than Real" was also produced by Tone Capone as well. "Talking S***" is one of my favorite tracks on here with Ant Banks hooking up a dope beat to it. My favorite track on here is "No One Loves You" with my favorite beat that was used from the S.O.S Band classic "No One Gonna Love You". Other tracks to note is "Ice Cream Man", "Hoo Ride", & Ain't No Stoppin'. Overall this CD is good but "Can You Feel Me" is better. Go pick this CD up for you Dru Down fans.

Nice, nice, nice. Some genuine funk on this album. 3 Ant Banks tracks makes for a nice start even before you put the disc in. Although Pimp of the Year seems to be everyones pick, call me dru down is definately a smoother track to ride to. Aint no stoppin is without doubt the second funkiest track on the album and then pimp of the year but what makes this a 5 star is the fact that at least 50% or more of the material is good enough to really get into. Not many ablums unless they are Too Short or Ant Banks come close to that

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic album from the East O!, July 29, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Explicit Game (Audio CD)
"Explicit Game" is Dru Down's first album. The Oakland playa rips it up all over the album. His rapping is very unique and so are his lyrics. He raps about everything - being a pimp-mack-playa, life in the hood, running from the police, the rap game, his connections with some women. He and the Luniz, who are all over the album, have some hilarious stories to tell. The beats are top notch stuff. The best song is #1 - Pimp of the year which has one of the phattest beats I've ever heard (it's by Ant Banks) and The double D has got his sick flow and lyrics all over it.
