I have been using this book with my son, a 2nd grader. It has been the simplest method of teaching phonics I have come across to date. I have two older children (both excellent readers)whom I did not use this method with. When using Explode the Code I can sit down with my son and do a few pages at a time(usually 3). I don't have to have charts, graphs, etc., although I do also read to/with him a few times a week . I'm seeing steady progress as we keep up our lessons. I appreciate the writing/spelling practice he is getting as well. This workbook has been an excellent tool for a slow-maturing reader.

My son actually asks to do this workbook. He went from hating reading and writing to loving it. Thanks Explode the Code! We also supplement with the online version. Check it out, (explode the code online) it's fun!

It is a nice book to practice at home for kids. I like the series. Tried 3 books so far in the series.
However, I wish some of the pictures in the book are a little more clear for the word expected. Several times we ended up fliping through the pages to figure out what the picture is really about.

We use Explode the Code as a phonics supplement. It is not our only phonics program, but it compliments all other phonics work. The kids love the adorable pictures and the funny sentences. I love that the lessons are not too short but not too long to keep their attention, and present phonics concepts in a straightforward way the builds on the concepts of the days and weeks prior. I would not use Explode the Code as my sole reading or phonics program, even for young children, but is a cheerful addition to our other work.

I love the Explode the Code books. My son, age 6, learns new words daily as he practices with explode the code and they are easy enough for him to learn on his own without additional instruction. We keep one handy in the car and he enjoys a lesson each day as we travel.
