Book Description

June 18, 1999 International Organization Readers

Over the last thirty years, international political economy and international relations have become increasingly sophisticated, both empirically and theoretically. Realist, liberal, and constructivist theorists have developed research programs that yield new insights into some of the most perplexing areas of international politics: the interplay between conflict and cooperation, the impact of domestic political structures on foreign policy, the role of institutions, and the influence of worldviews and causal beliefs on decision-making. In exploring these developments, this book also considers them from the perspectives of security studies, organization theory, and economics. This is a republication in book form of a special fiftieth anniversary issue of the journal International Organization.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding collection of essays by top IR/IPE theorists, August 12, 2004
By
This review is from: Exploration and Contestation in the Study of World Politics: A Special Issue of International Organization (Paperback)
Top-notch collection of essays that stand the test of time. Ranges from economist Barry Eichengreen's "Dental hygiene and nuclear war: how international relations looks from economics,"

to Martha Finnemore and Kathryn Sikkink (of "Activists beyond Borders" fame) on "International norm dynamics and political change", to Robert Jervis' classic overview of "Realism in the study of world politics." Great overview of institutions by Lisa Martin and Beth Simmons. Helen Milner explores the emerging synthesis of international, American and comparative politics (a long overdue synthesis in the field of political science), and Ole Waever explores "The sociology of a not so international discipline: American and European developments in international relations" -- the latter increasingly relevant given the havoc that George Bush has wrought with trans-Atlantic relations post 9-11. Wonderful essays by editors Peter Katzenstein, Robert O. Keohane, and Stephen Krasner, and by James March, Geoffrey Garrett, Miles Kahler, Michael Mastanduno, Johan Olsen, and John Ruggie. A "must" for every IR/IPE scholar.
