Book Description

11 and up
Explore Antarctica encourages students to understand the management of the Antarctic environment and issues of global importance linked to the Antarctic. It provides a comprehensive guide to the natural environment of the continent, as well as its history and its future. The book provides a brilliant illustration of how to apply scientific, social and environmental research to a specific topic of study. The author, Dr Louise Crossley, has worked in the Antarctic as an expedition and research station leader, and the book has been approved by the Australian Antarctic Division. The project has been developed by the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group (AUSLIG) of the Commonwealth Government of Australia, and funded by the Australian Antarctic Foundation. It is an authoritative work for students and the interested public alike.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Relatively few titles have been written on the natural history of Antarctica: this environmental study provides an important foundation for understanding the region and its natural history; from animals to the movement of ice. The basic compendium of details will prove accessible to both high school and adult readers with a special interest in the unusual region. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars it's great!, December 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Explore Antarctica (Paperback)
this book has lots of information about the continent presented in well-organized segments that are color coded (i.e. discovery, issues for the future). the text is accompanied by photos, maps, graphs and good captions. at 112 pages it is not overwhelming. recommend for adults and for kids in the classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book Designed to Help You "Journey" to Antarctica, November 24, 2008
This review is from: Explore Antarctica (Paperback)
I love this book.

A well-designed trade paperback that allows the reader to visit Antarctica from multiple angles: scientific, geographic, historical, environmental. (For details, take a look at the Table of Contents, below.) It has the clarity and wide scope that reminds one a bit of a high school text book, but unlike a textbook, it has patent enthusiasm for the subject and isn't afraid to try to cram as much information into as little space as possible!

And the pictures. Over 150 color illustrations in this 82 page book: mostly photos, but many maps, line drawings, charts, tables, schematics, all with informative and readable captions.
