My wife and I moved back to Alaska a couple of years ago and settled on the Kenai Peninsula. There is so much to do here, and so little time, that a good reference book like this one is indispensible. We have saved a lot of time researching these trails and correcting local maps by using this text. Really a very valuable tool for exploring the Peninsula. We use it a lot. Just finished a nice early winter hike to the Russian River Falls last weekend. Looked up a nice short easy hike and took off with the dogs.

Very helpful information for the casual and avid hiker. The introduction is packed with many helpful tips especially to those hiking in Alaska for the first time. The difficulty ratings of the hikes along with the elevation changes provide the information needed for a hiker to make the judgment on whether or not to take the hike . From past experience I know that elevation changes are especially important to those of us that are not well conditioned athletes.Making the maps larger and in color would be useful . Pictures from key locations also would add enjoyment to the book and encourage hikers.

Taz Tally's "50 Hikes in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula" is a first rate collection of day hikes, overnighters, and long traverses on the stunningly beautiful Kenai Peninsula in Southcentral Alaska.

Tally opens with a chart rating all the hikes, from easy to very difficult. A map follows, showing the location of the hikes with respect to the road network. Next is an introduction to the Kenai, some recommendations on gear, and some wise safety precautions.

The bulk of the book is a chapter by chapter description of each hike, with a fairly detailed narrative, a graphic showing the route, and a few black and white photos for perspective. The 2008 publication date means the information is fairly current. The book should allow a fit hiker a good selection from which to choose a summer's worth of fine walking.

Tally recommends the National Geographic series maps of the Kenai. The 1:105,000 scale may a challenge for hikers unfamiliar with Alaska. Todd Communications Road and Recreation Maps offer an alternative with more detail. Also, Tally notes that a weapon is no substitute for safe, sensible behavior; on the other hand, in known bear country, it is sensible to have a Plan B.

"50 Hikes in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula" is very highly recommended to walkers, hikers, and backpackers looking for good information on where to go and what to look for.

I would imagine that if you live in Alaska some edition of this book is on your outdoor reference shelf. But for day to day and completely updated purposes you'd probably rely most heavily on the internet or local blogs for your hiking info. But, if you're a visitor planning a trip to the Kenai Peninsula this book is the perfect menu, setting out all of your choices and whetting your interest for more. I've used this book to get myself oriented, to get a sense of what I can and can't fit into my trip, and to help with the process of choosing the best mix of hikes and walks. From there it's a short jump to the internet for even more current info. (That's especially necessary because this is the 2008 edition and the 2016 edition will come out too late for me.)

The book takes you on a tour that runs south from Anchorage. It starts at Byron Glacier and down to Seward. Then a backtrack from Seward to the Sterling Highway and abundant Skilak Lake trails. Continuing south we skip over Soldotna and the coastal communities and head directly to Anchor Point and Homer. The book ends with about 16 trails in Kachemak Bay State Park, (which is a bit much since you have to water taxi to the Park and such hikes are mostly practical for people staying in Homer for a few days.)

This menu offers a wide range of hiking and walking opportunities along the roads most frequented by visitors and so it is not only interestin but practical for an active tourist. There is plenty of information to help one gauge the challenges and rewards of each hike and Taz Tally's occasional personal comments are genial and welcome.

So, if you're trip planning and looking for an informative overview of your hiking options, this might work well for you. I found it very useful.
