Michele Bigley's account of Kauai was well researched and incredibly thorough. I spent six months on Kauai, but, this book made me realize that I had barely scratched the surface on Kauai's deep and rich history. In addition, Bigley leads you to 'off the beaten path' beaches and sites that show a part of Kauai most tourists never see. Highly recommend this book.

Excellent book for planning a trip to Kauai. The book includes many maps, pictures and 13 page section on the history of the island. The author obviously has a great love for the island and this sets the book apart from many travel books which often just become lists of things to do without much thought put into it. Reading this book, on the other hand, you get the feeling of being guided by someone who really cares about, and knows, the island.

All the phone numbers and addresses for restaurants, hotels, museums, etc. are there -- but it's the little details (e.g. the highlighting of more out of the way spots, the historical and cultural detail) that really sets this book apart from the others. Highly recommended.

I can't recommend this book enough. I've been to Kauai several times and thought I'd seen and done it all, but this book shows me that I haven't. I'm going again this spring and can't wait to check out all of these great recommendations! Also, there's not a lot of info out there with an eco-slant, so it's a refreshing new option.

Kauai: Great Destinations Hawaii: A Complete Guide (Great Destinations)

A great book if you're planning on visiting one of the more interesting islands. Although I've already been to Kauai before, now after having gotten the book, I'm thinking I need to go back. It turns out there were things I never knew were there, and this book gives all kinds of great information not only about the island itself, but about its people as well. A "must have" if you're visiting Kauai for the first time or even a "regular".

I am going to Kauai in January. My husband is from Oahu and he is usually skeptical of all travel books. But he REALLY loved this one! It's so informative. There is so much great information. This book is the best Kauai guide because it really gives you great places to go while respecting the aina of the people. Thanks Great Destinations Kauai!!!

The Frommer's and other such guides cover the basic nuts and bolts of touring in a locality well. To get a better feel for the history and culture as well as LOCAL favorite lodging, eating, and sightseeing and recreation, we find the National Geographic suggested Great Destination Guides to be an excellent supplement to Frommers. As senior citizens we appreciate their accessibility details. Reading the Great Destination guide is like listening to a friend who has lived in the area who might give you information from his personal experience. The graphics and photos are sparse, but the text is lively and draws the reader in as a one-on-one conversation might. This guide can be largely read as a regular book -- especially the history, culture sections. Even the discussion of places to see and places to eat are enjoyable to read in toto -- not just as thumbnail reviews. We will be visiting Kauai and Maui in December 2010 and we are looking forward to a much richer experience than that of 2008 visits when we did not have the local history context and local insider tips on good places to see and eat provided by this book.

I really appreciate the thought and research put into this book. I'm planning a 10 day trip to Kauai in the spring and with this publication I finally feel prepared. I live a very socially responsible lifestyle and I always like to extend this as much as possible into my travel and the author has highlighted so many great places to visit so I can actually achieve this!

This looks like a great book and i will update review later however the one map i can see that we get is scanned in sideways and there is no link to it so be sure to bookmark it when you find it. You would think that the people who scan in the eBooks would look at what they do. In a real book the page for a map is referred to often so it should be made easily accessible and printed so it can be seen on a screen (so landscape and not portrait as you would do in a real book). Surely not the authors fault but everyone should check.
