“Beautifully organized . . . candid.” (San Francisco Examiner)

His dad studied to be a priest and his mom was a poet, but instead of saving souls, his father saved Green Stamps and made gas caps in a factory, and instead of writing prose, his mother posed mannequins in a dress shop window. Understanding the ache and the longing in each of them was Tim Fish's first lesson as a writer.

With more than 20 years of experience as a writer and journalist, Fish has spent his life chronicling the lives of people, their triumphs and foibles. From his early days as a newspaper reporter to his current position as associate editor of Wine Spectator magazine, Fish estimates that he has interviewed 10,000 people or more, from politicians and school bus drivers to murders on death row and movie stars Gregory Peck and Nicholas Cage. His writing is distinguished by a unique, conversational voice and wry sense of humor.

Before joining Wine Spectator, Fish freelanced for such publications as Food & Wine and Cooking Light and was a consulting wine instructor at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley.

Fish grew up in rural Indiana and has traveled extensively, including China, France and Japan. Today, lives in Santa Rosa, Calif. and has been married 25 years to Peg Melnik, who is co-author of "Explorer's Guide Napa & Sonoma," now in its ninth edition. They have two children, Sophie and Tucker.

If you are planning a trip to Napa or Sonoma, this book is a must. It not only describes the wineries, it includes restaurant reviews and information about hotels.

Used good guidance for a great weekend in Calistoga and Napa. Ballooning, biking tour of local wineries, restaurant guide and uniquely personal service at the Avia all conspired to make a marvelous time. Lively and informative writing. Bought the book instead of ebook to pass along.

I recently moved to San Francisco. A friend gave me The Explorer's Guide. It's well organized and well written. It's the perfect guide for planning weekend trips just north of the city.

My fiance and I bought a couple books on the Napa & Sonoma region to help plan our honeymoon. This book was great as it had in-depth reviews on different attractions/vineyards/restaurants in every area of the Napa/Sonoma Valleys, and included some outside the region in the coastal areas. It's definitely helped us with planning.

Since we live in the San Francisco Bay Area, we visit Napa and Sonoma frequently. This book is handy, since it helps us discover wineries off the beaten path as also places to eat.

I am just returning from a week in Napa and downloaded this book in advance of my trip. When I went to use the index, to look up a particular vinyard, for example, there was no "clickable" link nor were there page numbers (of course) as in a hard copy book! So, I could find Heitz Vinyards, for example, but had no idea where in the book it was discussed. The book was all but useless. I did scroll through. It seemed quite repetitive. Overall, it did not live up to the reviews that I had read. My travel companion had a Fodor's Guide that was much more useful. I will ask for a refund.

This was the best guidebook that I read on the wine country. It covered all aspects of our visit and made good suggestions. At first I was overwhelmed by the choices of wineries and other sites but the book helped us narrow the choices down to a reasonable number. After reading 4 guide books, this was the only one we took with us.

We used this when we last travelled to Napa. It has all the large wineries, and most of the small ones. It was great to use as we toured, to keep notes in for the next trip. We liked this better than any other winery guidebook we could find.
