This guide to Wisconsin is authored by Mollie Boutell-Butler. Her text and photographs sparkle in the way thing do when created by someone truly in love with their subject. And Boutell-Butler's affection for her native state shines through. As a frequent visitor and sometime resident of Wisconsin for the past several decades, I can attest to the state's surprising uniqueness.
Boutelle-Butler gets much of it down on paper. Her writing style is friendly and inviting. She captures the essence of Wisconsin's many attractions with an admirable attention to details, like hours, accessibility, admission price (if any), even free WiFi access. She does something clever the restaurant listings and breaks them down into "Dining Out" and "Eating Out". The former is oriented toward "pricier, finer affairs" and the latter for the less expensive. It's a nice idea.
She breaks the book up into sections, which can be a bit idiosyncratic based on the subject: covering Milwaukee demands a different approach than one of Wisconsin's less densely populated areas. You'll find restaurants, lodging, specialty stores, attractions, events and much more. Boutell-Butler's descriptions all have a feeling of the personal to them, which is reassuring.
All in all, this is a well done guide and, in my opinion, covers much more than the "generic" guides for the area. I picked it up originally to plan a road trip with the grand kids, looking for things that would entertain them on an occasional stop. This is a lot more than what I was looking for - and a very welcome addition to my local lore library.
We bought several of the Wisconsin: An Explorer's Guide books as Christmas gifts and one for ourselves. This book is much more than a travel guide. The author has included interesting little tidbits about Wisconsin history etc. written with a great deal of humor. It's organized in a user friendly manner and looks like a lot of research went into finding all the quaint little spots that makes Wisconsin so special . I'm anxious to venture out with this book and check out the hot spots.
