5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights into an extraordinary place!
What I like about this book is that while it contains the usual helpful information about where to eat, sleep, shop and see the key sights (and sites), it presents a fascinating look into these two great national parks that are so close together yet so different. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not much meat.
I was looking for a book to plan our trip to Yellowstone with. This has some information about history and geology but otherwise very little about the park itself. It is mostly stuff like where to stay in other nearby towns that might be better done with a web search.
I got the Kindle edition and the maps don't enlarge well.
It wasn't worth the money for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights into an extraordinary place!, June 18, 2008
This review is from: Explorer's Guide Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks and Jackson Hole: A Great Destination (Explorer's Great Destinations) (Paperback)
What I like about this book is that while it contains the usual helpful information about where to eat, sleep, shop and see the key sights (and sites), it presents a fascinating look into these two great national parks that are so close together yet so different. It's obvious that the authors spend a great deal of time here and understand the nuances of place. Especially intriguing were the insights into wildlife issues, fire and other important ecological matters, as well as what makes the surrounding communities unique.
What also set this book apart was the attention that Jackson Hole received as an important part of this great vacation landscape.
I read to my husband as we drove through the parks, getting the story behind the story!

5.0 out of 5 stars The right kind of travel guide, February 24, 2009

I've used plenty of travel guides, and their usefulness comes down to one question I can ask myself when the trip is over: Did I merely find out where to go and what to do, or did I actually learn something I'll remember, and make a connection with the place? I used this guide for a trip through Yellowstone, and it helped me feel I really got to know the park - its history, its environment, its wildlife and its place in our culture. The authors have a true feel - and affection - for the places they describe. I ended up reading about places I wasn't even going to visit, because I felt like I was listening to an insider tell me the good stuff - the background and details that provide a third dimension to a destination. This guide passes the test with flying colors.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise, April 1, 2009

We usually use books like this to give us good information on where to eat, sleep, see the usual sights and maybe get a few insider tips. Yet this was especially informative and educational, and after a winter visit to Yellowstone to watch wolves -- a great time to see wildlife, even if it's a little chilly! -- I been following the area's issues with great interest since returning home, in part because of what I learned in this book. After a few days, I looked at buffalo, snowmobiles and wolves through a very different lens! For a guidebook, it's just a very nice read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and Jackson Hole, February 26, 2009
This review is from: Explorer's Guide Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks and Jackson Hole: A Great Destination (Explorer's Great Destinations) (Paperback)
This guide by Welsh and Moore is well-organized, intuitive and very useful. It has greatly enriched my travels in the parks and surrounding areas. The directions are clear and concise and the along-the-way points of interest and description of the terrain make the "getting there" a whole lot more fun. With this guide I feel confident in exploring these areas on my own. When time off is precious it is imperative that you have a guide that has done the research for you (so thoroughly) and allows you to make the most of your wanderings. Does anyone know of more guides of this caliber for the Northwest United States?

My wife and I are planning a road trip this June to this area of Wyoming and after reading this book found it to be a great resource for what to do, where to go and stay, and side trips that will make the vacation more enjoyable. Hats off to the level of detail and information the authors have put together in this book. Highly recommend it.

I'm glad I read this book previous to visiting Yellowstone National Park this past summer. It enabled me to appreciate my visit and also gave me info so I could be sure and see the things most interesting to me.

If you like to stay in hotels, eat in restaurants and shop, this is the book for you! If like me, you prefer to camp, cook your own food over an open fire, and spend your waking hours in the great outdoors, keep looking. There are 77 pages of hotels/motels and 2 pages dedicated to campgrounds. I think I'll visit the local Barnes & Noble where I can look before I buy.

I'm sorry i bought this ebook. It lacks maps and hiking info, which seem pretty essential. A complete waste of $9.99. It was my first Kindle ereader purchase and based on this, I probably won't be buying any more in the future.
