Biography

Al Green was one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s. His emotive voice crooned some of the greatest love ballads of the decade, particularly during his peak period between 1971-75. His big breakthrough was his third album Al Green Gets Next to You (1971), which included “Tired of Being Alone”. Let’s Stay Together (1972) included a title track that topped the pop charts, and a beautiful cover… Read more in Amazon's Al Green Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Explore Al Green, March 14, 2001
This review is from: Explores Your Mind (Audio CD)
Al Green Explores Your Mind contains some of the most spiritual singing of his secular career. "Take Me To The River" combines his two styles to the maximum with its Memphis soul sound and spiritual lyrics. "Sha-La-La" is a great song and was his last top ten pop single. His version of Chuck Berry's "School Days" is quite good as is "The City" and "One Nite Stand". Explores Your Mind was the last truly great r&b record Rev. Green made as after its release he started moving into his religious vocation full time.

4.0 out of 5 stars UNDERRATED, April 23, 2003

THIS ALBUM IS FOR HARDCORE AL GREEN FANS. OF THE 9 SONGS ONLY 2 WERE HITS, "SHA-LA-LA" AND "TAKE ME TO THE RIVER", BUT I CAN LISTEN TO EVERY SONG ON IT. SONGS LIKE ONE NITE STAND, SCHOOL DAYS, AND STAY WITH ME FOREVER ARE GREAT SOUL SONGS. THIS MIGHT NOT BE AS GOOD AS THE CALL ME ALBUM OR THE I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU ALBUM BUT IT IS A VERY SOLID ALBUM.

4.0 out of 5 stars worth tracks one and six, March 20, 2002

This review is from: Explores Your Mind (Audio CD)
al green is god,no doubt about it, but he didn't always sing the best songs. "explores your mind" is a great example: of course "take me to the river" is a classic up-tempo gospel-tinged hit, but it's not my favorite. i like al green best when he's in that sexy mid-tempo love groove that made his best songs like "tired of being alone" so timeless. this album has two of those: "sha-la-la (make me happy)" and "i'm hooked on you." the price of the CD is worth it for just these two songs. i mean , as great as al is, i really don't care for "the city," nor do i care for most of the songs on this one. anyway, if you love al's voice--and who doesn't?!--you might not be as picky as me.
either way, the cover and title are cool, and al is, yes, god.
