Great fun!,
By book lover!! (CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Exploring Ancient Egypt Fun Kit (Dover Fun Kits) (Hardcover)
My child really enjoyed the whole set.The masks were so much fun and the reading was great! All the little stickers and stencils really enhanced her understanding of ancient Egyptian life with the coloring books that came with it.I purchased it for my 5 year old because she showed interest in ancient Egypt, and it really got her going, perfect for her age so that she had things to manipulate and use her imagination with. For someone who really is just getting started in learning about ancient Egypt I would say that this a great starter filled with fun and interesting things!

I debated about whether to buy this kit when my kids and I were doing a homeschooling unit on Ancient Egypt. I think I still would have bought it, if I had to do it over again. It wasn't really necessary, but I think the price made it worth it.The kit includes four small Dover books (Egyptian stencils, Egyptian tatoos, two books of Egyptian stickers). My littlest kids enjoyed these the most. The stencils are not very sturdy, but the kids liked being able to make real Egyptian designs. The stickers are also not very sticky, but I think this is so you can use them over again. The kit also has three masks, one of Pharaoh, one of Nefertiti, and one of a cat. I thought they were kind of creepy and small, but whatever. Also included was a small poster of King Tut's face mask, which is iconic of the whole subject. The part I am not so sure about is the two larger Dover coloring books. There is one on Daily Egyptian Life and one on King Tut. Both are much harder than typical coloring book age kids... these are for upper elementary kids, ideally, with tiny spaces to design and color. The Tut one is more image friendly, but I found the Daily Life one to be slightly dark in tone... the Egyptian faces are kind of ugly, there is a two page spread with topless dancers, etc. But I'm kind of picky. If you have older kids who love to color, they are worth it. My kids couldn't really appreciate them. Plus, who really needs 48 pictures on just Ancient Egypt to color? They get the point after just a couple.

Overall, we are happy with this Egypt kit. It does have some very neat things in it. We love the stamps, masks, etc. What we wre not so fond of, was the coloring book. Two reasons why we did not like the coloring book so much: 1. There is alot of detail, which makes it hard for younger ones to really *color*. Lots of fine lines to go between and so forth. 2. Not really crazy about how it included a picture of topless Egyptian dancers. This was a REAL surprise. I wasn't very comfortable with that. Some people might be, but not us. The coloring book is really the only drawback in my humble opinion. Everything else was great. So, if you, too, are uncomfortable w/nude art in a coloring book, then you could either take that page out, or just not use the book. Again, everything else is just fine.

I gave this as a Xmas gift to my daughter who homeschools 2 boys. She had this on her wishlist so it was pretty easy for me to choose. She was very happy to receive it and was impressed. They are studying Ancient Eqypt now and she thought it would definitely be of benefit in teaching.

This kit was really great for all my homeschooled kids, ages 2-6. The masks are very durable and the kids loved them. The tattoos, stickers and stencils were a lot of fun for everyone and easy enough for all. My oldest really loved the stain glass coloring pictures. I highly recommend this kit.

Perfect Egypt Activity Pack,

I homeschool and was looking for an activity pack that wasn't too expensive but got the job done. This is it! I have 3 boys so the fact that it comes with 3 masks is awesome. Also the coloring books are very authentic and tell the story of Ancient Egypt which is really cool. The pictures are very detailed though and not appropriate for small kids (under 5 years old or so). My 7 year old is really excited to use them because they are detailed, he doesn't like to color in normal coloring books since they are typically for preschoolers. It has a few stickers books and a hieroglyphic stencil pack too, very neat. This is the only activity pack I'll be using for our Egyptian study (for other hands on ideas I'm using "Old Testament Days").
